"Its the next day. Breakfast is ready an I warn ye its fit fer kings an queens." Shad needed no urging. He leaped out of bed and dressed in a hurry and washed at the rivers edge. Hurry up an comb yer hair, Bompy sputtered as he brought the hot platters to the table. It looks as if a mouse had made a nest in it." The boy had a great liking for hot cakes and maple sirup and sausage. Bumpy seemed to find a sufficient reward for his work in Shads enjoyment He kept an eye on him in the fashion of an interested witness. Dont spill so much sirup on em," he was wont to say. By Jeedix! You make em look like an Island in a red pond. There aint no sense In that. You dont take moren two swallers fer a flapjack. Anybody would think ye was mad at em." Bumpys sputtering had a background of good nature. Shad enjoyed it. After breakfast he brought in two palls of water and filled the woodbox. Soon after seven oclock he set out for Amity Dam with a volume of Blackstone under his arm. Be on hand for dinner a leetle before two, Bumpy called to him from I do not feel sure, although there is much to indicate it," the doctor I knowu Royce well. He looked through many pages of Commentaries and noted down the meaning of the unusual words and Latin phrases. He gave the boy a the the door. Having arrived in the familiar village, Shad went at once to the house of his friend the doctor. The latter was reading in his office. I am glad to see you, boy, he said without rising. Sit down and tell me what has happened. Shad told the doctor of the steps that led to the capture of Algyre and of the prisoners sullen attitude. Well done!" the doctor exclaimed with no change in the expression of his face. It will yield no immediate result but it is a long step toward the truth. Soon or late the man may uncover It He Is a smart fellow. He knows that Blake has not evidence enough to hold him. We have as yet only a suspicion. Even if he became a witness for the people, he could not escape life Imprisonment or a long term for a crime so atrocious. He is a born gambler. He would rather take his chances in the West. But if they have a good case against him and he should be convicted we may expect help from him. We may not have long to wait. Meanwhile, my dear boy, you will, of course, get a share of the reward. I havent thought of that. I wouldnt know what to do with It, Shad answered. But you would know what to do with an education. Im getting educated. Im learning something every day. Id rather the reward would go to you and Colonel Blake." The doctor smiled and said: Well, boy, if I am entitled to any of it, which I question, it shall be yours. There is another matter of which I would speak. You are to mention it only to Colonel Blake. Be careful that no one overhears you. I recall your telling me once of the handsome young lady who worked in the store In South Bolton. You had seen her one day at Bumpy Browns shack. I went to call on a patient in that village about ten days ago. I heard some gossip about her. It was interesting but unkind. I went to the store. The girl was there alone. He left five hundred dollars to the Home for the Friendless." Shad remembered how fussy the deacon had been about his mail. When told that there was none for him he was wont to stare sternly at the boy as If he didnt believe It, and go away muttering. Miss Spenlow added: I have written a poem which was read at the church sociable the other evening. Some said that It ought to be published. I will read it to you. At this point Shad was rescued by the arrival of Bony, who had been mending his canoe. Shad wrote a letter to Colonel Blake, in which he reported the news which had come out in his interview with the doctor. Soon the boys set out afoot for Browns cove. Shad swore Bony to secrecy and told him of the late phases in the remarkable problem of the People, and of the capture of Algyre. Its wonderful what youve done, said Bony. I heard em tellin in the store that the district attorney thought you was the most promisin boy that he had ever seen. Shad smiled and was silent for a little time. The words had quickened the beating of his heart. They were bread to his soul. I dont know what he thinks, Shad answered. Hes never told me. Tm going to do my best to please him. Thats all I can do. I feel sorry for poor ol Bumpy. He was up at the Dam while you was away to see if there was any letter for him. 01 Doran was In the store an abused him shameful called him a liar an a thief an a murderer, Bumpy walked away an never said a word. When that ol pup Doran got out o the store I called him every name I could lay my tongue to. Shad answered : The poor old man never said a word to me about it. He must have a heavy heart in him but he keeps cheerful. Theres something kind o wonderful about him. I know a lot I couldnt tell not yet. There aint one o them pin heads that does so much talkin thats fit to black his shoes.. They were nearing the little house in Browns cove. The only object of keeping male birds is to get eggs for hatching and that season is past The farmer should remember that the rooster is consuming feed which neutralizes the profits from a laying hen. A still more important reason for disposing of the males is the production of infertile eggs. We hear a great deal about egg quality. The best way to improve egg quality is to produce infertile eggs. Fertile eggs do not keep well. Five per cent of all eggs marketed are a total loss because of chick development Besides a large proportion of rot is due directly to chick development being retarded. The object of a hen in producing eggs is to reproduce herself. If males are present and the egg is fertilized, the embryo starts to develop within the body of the hen. When a proper temperature is again maintained this development continues. There will be a slow growth at any temperature above 70 degrees Fahrenheit A temperature of 84 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit for three days will produce as great a development as one day at a temperature of 103. A temperature of 104 to 110 for one day will produce an embryo as far developed as three days at a temperature of 103. Production of infertile eggs is especially advantageous during the summer. Such eggs do not develop germs, stand shipment well, withstand heat, are easily preserved, slow to decay and cost less. The hen will lay as well or better with no males present in the flock. An infertile egg can thus be produced and, if unwashed, may keep A large percentage will indefinitely. dry up before they will rot. At twenty pne weeks of age, the average weight of the March pullets was exactly five pounds; the best year, they weighed 5.18 pounds and the poorest year 4.83 pounds. The May pullets averaged 4.27 pounds for the six years, 4.42 pounds being the best and 4.10 pounds the poorest. The comparative weights remain about the same throughout life.
