ThunderitornM BEGINS If you want to be healthy be sure to choose healthy grandparents, says D i. Oliver Wendell Holmes. If you waht to keep the kind of teeth that stay in your mouth when you yawn, be sure that your mother starts feeding you good materials at least seven months before you are born, says Elva Miller, . Extension nutritionist for ttye Utah State Agricultural College, who has spent the past week discussing Child Devolp-men- t problems with the mothers of Rich County. The importance of getting an early start for sound teeth and strong bones', cannot be too greatly emphasized. Thoth development starts during the third month of pregnancy and at birth the first teeth are fully formed in the jaw. The quality of these teeth, therefore is determined almost entirely during the parental " period. As a result of poor diet at this time, changes take place which interfere with normal development. Destruction may go on in the sections of the tooth where the nerves and blood vessels are found. yThe enamel may become soft and chalky.-The . teeth which later appear are likely to he poor in form, easily worn down, and are more succeptabe to decy than those which are supplied thru the mothers foods with essentials for normal growth. Nutrition is the big problem in those months before the child is born, both for the mother and the child, If the mother is going to provide building material for her childs teeth and bones and nerves, and at the same time hare sufficient, building material left so that she may come through this period with her own u impaired. She must 'plan her diet to include wheat uh; nutritionist calls the essential foods. The essential foods include one quart of milk each day, whether the mother likes it or not, three servings of vegetables, one of which, may be potatoes and one of which should be a leafy vegetable, two servings of fiuit, one to be cohs-e- n from the citrous friuts such as or-- anges, lemons or grapefruit, or she may substitute tomatoes. Next, the mother should have two servings ' of whole grain products, such as whole wheat bread or breakfast cereals, two servings of protejn foods not more than one of whix-l- fs meat, 8 glasses of water and one teaspoonful of cod liver oil again, whether she likes it or not. The pieuatal period is apt to be the most negelected period in the childs deveolpment, since the mother is so apt to choose her diet according to the whims of a capricious appetite instead of discilplinirg herself to eat the foods which are needed in the process of building a healthy child. The diet during the nursing period is also important for tooth building and must still contain the essential foods. It is the right of every child to be breast fed from 6 to 9 months, rot only does breast feeding give the babe four times as much chance to Vve thru the first year hut it - also insures better tooth and jaw deveolp-menBecause the child has lo work harder t'vjret his food in natures v tv does from the bottle, his Jaws get .more exercise and consequently are better deveolped so that i.s teeth have a better chance of being 'Well developed and well spaced. ' A hered-'-.- ' envoimment and diet which? pro? ce- of poor quality, flahbv muscle. and low resistance to infections of all . kinds, invariably show their' effects on the teeth. On the other band, the child who has been properly fed permanently as well ns during the infant and earlv childhood period is in a good phy sical and has a chance for sound teeth as well as hones of fine, firm , f 6-- t. th.-nfa- 1 con-diiltij- , texture. Mothers who are interested in keep ing in touch with the newer knowledge of child deveolpment may get further assistance from publications of the Childrens Bureau, U. S. Dept, of Labor, Wash.D. C.
