Show FEED COWS GRAIN WHEN ON PASTURE keeps up milk flow for fall production the better dairyman knows thatis that it pays to feed ills his cows in the summer us as well as in winter says G W tallas jr of the new york state college of agriculture for the past ten years dairymen in all parts of new york state have been feeding their cows better in the summer I 1 As an example of results from rec ord keeping and better feeding mr spoke of a dalry dairyman inan in oswego county who pho five years ago had 10 cows which produced pounds pound of milk with pounds of butterfat the next year if 17 cows produced pounds of with 2335 pounds butterfat the third year 13 cows produced pounds of milk with 1974 pounds of butterfat and the fourth year 14 cows produced pounds of milk with pounds of butterfat during the first summer the cows were fed no grain during june or july and only four pounds a cow a day during august during the fourth summer the cows received an average of four pounds a day and were fed somewhat according to production although they were still underfed the pounds average tor for the fourth year was at least partly due to better summer feeding one dairy herd improvement association member said recently 1 I find that it if pays to keep the cows in the barn until june 1 then the grass has bus a good start and has some substance in it my illy cows have good pasture for june but I 1 continue to give sheea them a little grain about four pounds a day soon after july 3 1 1 I begin to cut green alfalfa for ahem and also increase the grain tills holds up the milk flow and keeps the cows in condition tor for next fall |
