Show RAISE AND BREAK A PAIR OF OXEN boys find it pleasant fas cina ting and Profit profitable ble ny by 11 II 4 OAn connecticut college replying to tile inquiry of a reader nt oxford N Y I 1 would woul a say that it would be entirely possible to ralso raise and break a pair of 0 xen oxen starting with bull calves I 1 would suggest that the earlier they are trained the ensler easier it will be first the calves should be trained to lead with a halter then they can be tied together and driven as a pair A small yoke voice can be made and fitted to them at an early age if desired and if handled bandied carefully they can be hitched to a small sled or cart and taught to do all of the things that a pair of oxen would bo be used tor for many a boy throughout the eastern part of our country has haa trained one or more pairs of steers as he grew up on the farm and found it a pleasant fascinating and profitable castrille past rille it Is rather difficult to fit a harness to a steer or ox although it has been done I 1 know of ono one owned by C S miller of waterbury conn that has been kept several years and used as a single hitch ile he has been used for making paths for the whole neighborhood drawing fuel and manure culli I 1 voting gardens and making himself generally useful A horse collar caw can be used on a steer or ox and the necessary harness including bridle bit and lines can ba fitted but for all double work I 1 should strongly recommend the yoke in fact a single yoke Is sometimes used the younger the calves are ed the better as a rule although it la is a common practice to castrate calves for steers at any time from two to six weeks of age the principal objection to deferring the operation longer Is a somewhat greater risk and tile the fact that the become somewhat y in appearance detracting from their trim clean cut lines principally about the fiend an and 1 neck and their attractive horns often an important part in the beauty of a well weil matched ox team |
