The tomato Is one of the most profitable and dependable crops in Utah, in 1922 there were over 3,000 acres margrown for canning Inctoiy and vines of numbers ket, besides untold of its In home gardens. Because love of warmth, the tomato is well adapted to many of our valleys, where it Is made to fruit abundantly with an ample supply of water. This fact stands out in the U. S. Census Reports which show that .Utah produces the highest yield per acre of tomatoes the figure being 9.4 tons when the national acreage is 4.0 tons, tons. The tomato turlves in any soil which contains sufficient moisture for It is not at all particular about the percentage of clay, sand and regravel. The plant does, however, spond to a high organic content, so for the highest yields It is best to choose a loam with a mixture of both clay and sand: The soil must be well drained. The exact treatment of the soil varies with the type, hut since the tomato likes a moderate amount of fertility the treatment should include the plowing under of manure, eithei stable or green. Eastern growers lind the best results from plowing under red or crimson clover and the addition of a complete commercial fertilizer high In phosphates. Where '.he clovers are objectionable an an aual legume could he useu such as canning or field peas. Manure should lurn'sh the desired phosphates. The quality of seed used will decide whether the crop Is to be profitable or not. Utmost pains should lie taken to secure the very best seed There are many good varieties ; some of the commonest for canning are Stone, Land ret h, Greater Baltimore. Bonny Best; for early market: Far liana and Chalks Early Jewel; for main crop market, Matchless. Var ious growers are enthusiastic for dit ferent strains of these varieties so it Is probable that each peculiar soil and condition will demand a particular strain and variety. Fdnce the tomato has a longei grow ng season than this climate af fords, the plants must be started in a hot oed. For the earliest market seeds may be sown in February sc that the plants can be set in the fields in May; for the cannery, seed pre sown in March so th it the plants may be set In the field about May 30 There are many methods of raising tomato plants, i hut to he a the process must produce a Ini'1: stocky, hardy plant Just ready bloom. This may he accomplisiefl by sowing the seed broadcast or rows and thinnng out the resuklin plants to stand 3 or a inches aJ.!rt-Latesoil is tilled In around th?m-tInduce roots to grow from the sterns The same result may be secunjd by transplanting the seedlings, whet the first true leaves appear, to stand the) desired distance apart. The best method for raising plants is to sow the seed or transplant the young plants into pots, cans, striw-berrcups or paper cups called dirt bands. This allows the roots to grow undisturbed and when the plants are set in the field the roots are not Injured, so' the plants keep right on grow ng. The experience 01 the Experiment Station with dirt bands lias shown a usual loss of less than one per cent, and furtlfermore the plants do not wilt when set In the field. In setting in the field the plants are set in mud at the side of a stream of water or the water is run down the furrow immediately after the plants are set. The plant must have plenty of water when it is first set In the field. The plants are usually set in check rows from .1 by 4 feet to 4 by 5 feet. This allows for cross cultivation which materially reduces the cost of hoeing. The fied is irrigated often enough to keep tile soil moist s? that the plants may grow cont nuousiy. Cultivation to conserve moisture, destroy weeds, and aid the bacterial growth in the soil should be continued from the time of setting out t the time when the plants spread so much that they will be intured. For distant market, tomatoes should be picked Just as they begin to turn red and sometimes while they are sllll white. For loc.nl market they may he nearly ripe, and for the canner they are picked while The pic ing ripe but still firm. should he often so that the product Large may he of uniform ripeness. quantities of soft tomatoes are often culled out at the factory Just because growers are not careful on this point Yields may lie expected varying from G to 20 tons per acre, and cases are known of much higher yields. Fo the early variety smaller yields may he expected bnt the advantage should For come from the higher prices. the market, tomatoes are packed In rows in flat boxes, care heng taken to grade all of one sUe Into one box "Canners are hauled to the factory loose in lug boxes. , There are several bad pests of tomatoes in this state. Western blight, a gradual yellowing, drying up and dying of the plant Is the most serious enemy since It cause and remedy are unknown. This disease is now being studied and we should soon know how to overcome TILE DRAINAGE Just Tile drainage Is just as beneficial and productive of results in tlie average (arm orchard as in the field of corn or potatoes. Tlie orchard soil, we find, needs aerating and ventilating Just as any other soil, and tiling renders the rootbed all the more retentive of needed moisture, so necessary to the fruit In the growing season, says a writer in Successful Farming. Wet soils are cold soils and often sour, neither of which produces the best of apples, peaches or pears. Cultivating flie wet soil about the roots of the trees is just os damaging as plowing the wet soil about the roots of corn or potatoes for the time being and certain weeds are difficult of eradication in the orchards where It Is too wet to work the ground. None of the orchards set In the past have long remained in good, thrifty growing order when planted on pooriy So many we have drained soil. known to select a high clay spot on the farm dose to tlie residence for their orchard and tiien get such poor results many times because the soil itself was and poorly drained it seems that surface drainage might he sufficient in one way since no water will stand on the surface about the trees, hut it is that wet, clammy, cold clay about the roots that absorbs ind holds the water which does the damage. Tlie ideal orchard soil is that in which the water is either moving ip or down every day In the year. In wet weather the rain or melting snow water seeps readily down to underground drains. In dry weather cap illary action has become well estab lished and tlie soil water Is coming up to feed the trees from vast storage i OF BEAUTIES But Natives of Places Have Their Own Idea of What Is Beautiful. Meyer Krupp of Seattle, veteran trader of furs, who for 25 years has pencil ated the places in tlie Orient, says that even in islands that are uncharted and virtually unknown the beauty of American women is known. For, when trading sable skins, the natives demand in return pictures of pretty women. Mr. Krupp takes on eacli trip hundreds of of women, lie selects photographs tile pictures at random. One can never tell what the natives demands will be for womens says Mr. Krupp, according to the Seattle Times. Blonds as a rule photo-giapli- are much desired. One n s, motion- star, whose salary is reputed to be equal to that of the President. members of his cabinet and the director of the mint combined, would no doubt be shocked If she knew the lack of appreciation evidenced among tlie natives of her beauty.
