A group of people, often a fraternal organization would agree to provide death benefits for its members. When someone died, the group was assessed for the cost of the payment. paid Everyone the same, regardless of age, health or anything else. It sounded like a great idea but it wasnt. Heres why. As the group aged, assessments became more frequent, making it more difficult to recruit new and younger members. As group size dwindled, each members assessments began to rise. Eventually, the money ran out. The answer to this was, and is. to charge people for insurance according to the risk they want to insure. Life insurers generally charge younger people less and older people more in exchange for the promise of a death benefit should they die while insured. That helps make sure the price is the best possible for everyone and that the insurance company can afford to stay in business long enough to pay off when it has to. Many would assess that as a big improvement over the old assessment society. Ms. Leonard is spokeswoman for the American Council of Life Insurance, and Health Insurance Association of America. There was no relationship between the children's and other peoples perception of them, Dr. Lerner found. The attractive kids were more popular, doing better in school, and having good relationships with parents, but they didnt see it that way. They didnt even see themselves as attractive." Dr. Lerner has studied physical attractiveness in young adolescents before, with similar findings. However, the current study is one of the first to focus on attractiveness over a two-yeperiod. Physical attractiveness is not constant, especially at this age, he says. You get pimples, you get braces, you get the braces off. One year youre taller than everyone in your class, the next year youre average." In addition, the change from sixth to seventh grade means a jump from elementary school to junior high, where puberty becomes more important. Sexual maturity doesnt matter as much in elementary school, Dr. Lerner points out. But, with the move into junior high, suddenly your physical development affects your popularity with the kids. It becomes an older, higher-statu- s index of how grown-u- p you are. The Lerners study is funded by the William T. Grant foundation. 295-052- on Pam THE SMELL have seclusion. Firms with fewer than 20 employees provide 90.6 percent of all new jobs created by new companies. But 62.6 percent of these same firms fail within their first four years. To find out why so many small businesses fail, Minolta Corporations Business Equipment Division sponsored a Gallup poll of over 1200 owners and top managers of manufacturing and service firms with fewer than 500 employees. The survey found that 48 percent of the firms with 9 employees cited lack of capital as the reason why small businesses fail. Personal assets were the principal source of capital used to start the majority of existing businesses. Bank loans were the second most common key source. Health care practices, which typically require an investment in costly medical equipment are an exception to this rule. A majority (56 percent) of founders of health care practices 20-49- Make extra money the garage sale way. say a loan was the primary source of capital. This dependence on personal assets may explain the high failure rate for small businesses, said John Vacca, director of marketing communications for Minoltas Business Equipment Division. In the opinion of those whose companies have made it past the start-u- p phase, lack of capital was cited more often than any other factor as the reason why so many other businesses fail to survive this initial stage. Other reasons for failure included lack of business knowledge (23 percent), poor management (19 percent), inadequate planning and inexperience (15 percent each).
