Show MAY 12, 1987 L, Baseball wrap: Region 4 tight; Lancers hanging tough By KEITH DUNCAN All of a sudden the Bountiful Braves are back in the thick of the playoff picture in Region Four baseball. With just two games remaining for each team in this league, it now comes down to do or die time, but the Braves just happen to be playing better than anyone else at pre- sent. Last Friday they clobbered Viewmont 16-- 5 in five innings for their second straight win and third solid outing in a row. Highland, who had been cruising along undefeated in league play, fell to Woods Cross. That victory enabled the Cats to prolong their season. Davis meanwhile was an 18-- 9 victor over LAYTON Its not time to give up in Layton yet. The Lancer baseball team came back from an 2 deficit against Ray Meibos Clearfield Falcons and won the game 14-- 9 to keep their playoff hopes alive in Region One baseball. as The game was actually deadlocked at six runs for team Clearfields young exploded in the fourth inning to move ahead But Layton came charing back with four runs in the fifth inning and seven more in the sixth, to take complete command of the game. In all, Layton ended up with 21 hits. The way things have been going for us, the kids really could have laid down and quit," said Brad Hawkins, But they battled back and have kept themselves alive for a playoff berth. With the victory, Layton stands tied in fourth place with Box Elder at Only three teams will represent Region One in the playoffs. This Tuesday, Layton was to have battled Box Elder in a very important game for either team. That game was to have been played in er 8-- 2-- 2, 8-- 2. 3-- 5. 7-- the Braves Layton. Just a game ahead of Layton is the Bonneville Lakers at a team Hawkins crew has beaten twice this year already. On Tuesday of 4-- 4, this week, Bonneville was to have played Weber and the Lakers were going to try and beat the Warriors for the second time this year. Layton of course is hoping Weber commands in that game. 9-- 8. Paul James continues to hit the ball well, lashing two singles in his first two at bats against Bountiful. Viewmont and Woods Cross will stage their battle on Tuesday, the winner looking more like a playoff team for sure. Bonnevilles final league appearance comes against the Clearfield Falcons on Friday. Meibos crew is young but they have never given up and have kept battling back, so Bonneville will have their hands full. DAVIS DARTS only 7-- So with those two games left, Highland will play Davis on Tuesday. Bountiful will go against East and Viewmont and Woods Cross will battle it out in an game. The Rams are presently 1 in league action and Viewmont follows with a 3 mark. Seniors like Boyd Murray have been leading the way and teaching good things to these younger players. Sanh Johnson went 4 for 4 against Clearfield and has proven to be Laytons top dog on the mound as a pitcher, as just a junior. The rest of these juniors have made their mark in Layton baseball as well, guys like B.J. Lovell (went 4 for 5 against Clearfield), Rod Dixon (was 3 for 5 5 against Clearfield), Chris Trujillo (4 forhad against Clearfield) and Chris Thompson two crucial hits for Layton. Junior Greg Johnson picked up the victory for Layton against Clearfield. So far Layton has three juniors or sophomores starting, they include Larry Canderella, B.J. Lovell, Chris Thompson, Chris Trujillo, Marcus Trinity, Sanh Johnson, and Greg Johnson. We are playing for this year, said Hawkins, We havent even discussed what might happen next year. But I will say here that we might have a good chance of doing some nice things if the kids just keep improving. hit. extra-bas- e Region Four Sports Calendar Davis will face both Woods 9. All of that means that Layton could put themselves in a very good position to playoff for a state berth if they can pick up a couple of victories this week against Box Elder and Roy, no easy task by any means. It would also help to have Bonneville lose at least one game, if not two of them. Both of Laytons games this week are at home. Land owners cooperate in tree planting plan Twenty landowners in conjunc- tion with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) have completed the planting of 59,575 seedlings on private land for wildlife habitat. The 22 miles of woody vegetation will also reduce soil erosion. Landowners participating in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) do so on a voluntary basis. Areas designated by the owners are planted with trees, shrubs, permanent grasses and legumes to protect the soil. Landowners receive an annual rental payment from the CRP, a federal govern ment program, to take specific lands out of production for 10 years. The DWR contributed half the seedlings and the biologist to establish these plantings. The kinds and numbers of Utahs wildlife will increase within five years as the cover becomes established. Hungarian partridge, pheasant, mourning doves, sharptailed grouse and mule deer should benefit the most from this innovative program. Landowners benefit, not only be receiving payment, but also, by controlling soil erosion, and increasing wildlife. siAd ik Region four tennis .
