Show OCTOBER 6, 1987 Lancers play out the clock to nip in Region One tilt Falcons, 30-24, CLEARFIELD They did a good job of controlling the ball and eating up the clock, said Clearfield's Brent Hancock in reference to Laytons style of football last Friday night. Such was the case as the Lancers posted their sixth straight win this season, a 30-2- 4 victory over the neighboring Falcons. But perhaps the standout ball-contr- ol than the run. Tim Gardner completed 7 of 10 passes in Clearfields d final scoring drive, including a touchdown pass to Hiatt that Gardner made the score then found Monte Geertgens open in the end zone for the conversion and Clearfield had narwith 5:01 rowed the score to still remaining in the game. A big holding penalty nullified a six-yar- 30-2- 0. two-poi- 30-2- 2 33-ya- drive and that put Clearfield to bed came just as the third quarter was winding down and the fourth was being born. It came right in the middle of a furious Clearfield comeback that was seeing the Falcons rally from a 24-- 0 deficit at halftime to a 4 closing. Like every other Layton scoring drive on the night, this one started in Lancer territory and required at least four or five first downs to keep the thing alive. The final scoring drive started on Laytons 20 yard line and being content to keep the football on the ground, Layton ran off 14 straight running plays before Tom Moore scored and extended the score to 30-1Moore wasnt the only hero in that final touchdown drive; you can also credit Troy Murray, Keith Lawrence and Chris Trujillo who all carried the pigskin at lease once. Im so proud of our kids, said Laytons Tom Moore. Yea, we did let em get back in the thing, but when we had to score, we did. But Clearfield did keep the game interesting. The Falcons came right back and scored on an 80 yard drive themselves, using mostly the pass rather time-consumi- 24-1- 4. nt gain by Moore on rd Laytons next drive and it eventually forced Layton to turn the ball over on a Murray punt. The Bracken Larsen took the punt and made several nifty moves in setting his team up for a drive from potential game-tyin- g fleet-foote- Laytons d line. 36-ya- rd But a nasty holding penalty put Clearfield back behond the 50 yard line and three plays later, Gardner was being intercepted which all but shut the door on Clearfield. The Lancers gave Clearfield a safety and two points with 43 seconds left when they were fighting close to their own goal line. But Murray got them out of the fix with a booming kick off the free kick after the safety. The Falcons could virtually do nothing from there. They had over 60 yards to go and just 23 seconds left. They were also handicapped with no timeouts. Terry Moore hunted down Gardner on a QB sack and B.J. Lovell ended it all g with a interception. Layton made things appear somewhat easy in the first half as they scored on their first four possessions. The first drive was their opening one as they went 80 yards on 14 plays for a 0 lead. One of the key game-endin- 7-- plays in that series was an first down picked up by Murray with Layton still deep in their own territory. Murray went off tackle to gain two yards for the crucial first down. There was one pass play, but mostly it was Murray, Moore, Lawrence or Sahn Johnson picking up yards on the ground. Lawrence scored the first TD from out and Murray booted the extra point. Clearfield wasnt just lying down and playing dead either. The Falcon defense had their moments in the game including an impressive goal line stand that nearly shutdown Laytons first score. Layton had brought the ball to Clearfields one yard line and it took four tries before the Lancers were successful in getting the ball over. Laytons second scoring drive started on their own 36 yard line and after a couple of Murray passes to Rick Sparks and Trujillo, the Lancers were scoring their second TD on a lightning-quic- k move by Johnson.
