Show JULY 21, 1987 By KEITH DUNCAN BOUNTIFUL Clark Stringfellow has earned the nickname "Boog over the past couple of years and its rightfully his. The former Bountiful baseball star checks in at always-happ- y sure too, that I wont have an automatic spot on the baseball team. There will be some proving to be done. Both Clark and Sis appear to be the best of friends and their friendship now continues on the college scene. Stringfellow has learned a ton about baseball this past summer from John Edwards and Andy Anderson, the two legion coaches. And he continues to pick up things from great hitters like Sid and Tony Smith. His hitting improvement can be credited a great deal to the instruction from his coaches. Its weird how players stand in the batters box, at least how they vary so much. Sid, Tony and Rett (Anderson) stand back in the box quite a ways, but I place my back foot right even at the plate where it turns up to be a triangle. So I'm way in front of the box. My uncle taught me that by doing it that way, when I faced a righthanded pitcher, for instance, the curveball doesnt really start to break until it hits the middle of the plate. So by staying up in the box, Im able to hit that curve before it starts to break. Maybe when we get to the tournament and start facing quality pitchers, I will start stepping back some. Clark is looking forward to his football season at SUSC. He stands 4 and weighs 245 right now. He and Sid work out a minimum amount of time everyday at either the high school or the local Fitness America shop. That includes plenty of weightlifting and running. I owe a lot to Sid, hes the one that talked me into playing football my senior year. That proved to be one of the best decisions of my life. So far, I really enjoyed it. I had played one or two years of little league football and had hated it. To be very frank about it, the coaches at Bountiful made football fun and worthwhile. They have to be the greatest coaches any high school could have. Coach (Larry) Wall, Coach (Occie) Evans and all of them are just terrific. They were so positive about things even when we lost. Im But too, American Legion has some awfully good pitchers to look at. Week in and week out, Stringfellow has met the good and the mediocre and has tamed them all. One thing that has helped me a great deal is the weightlifting Ive been doing everyday to get ready for football at Southern Utah State. Lifting weights and stretching has provided me with so much power. Ive really been hacking at the ball and they re falling. I hit a lot of line shots in high school ball but they never fell in for base hits. But now everything is getting through the cracks. Clarks hard work not only in the weightroom, but in the his father Val can be batting cage has paid off for him. He and week practice. batting doing a times three least found at I love to hit, said Clark, "I try to get out as much as I can. Val Stringfellow works at the Federal Aviation Administration office as an instructor in air traffic control, but he never fails to plan his schedule so as to see all of Clarks sporting events. He loves it, continued Clark, "At the first of the American Legion season they asked him to keep the book and hes been faithful in doing it at every game now. He really loves keeping track of us, its almost turned into a hobby. The other night he was telling us some stats that Id never heard of before, things like batting averages of people with runners in scoring position and things like that. over 240 pounds and stands more than six feet tall. Hes been about as good a first baseman as that school has ever seen and of course resembles in appearances and talent the former major leaque star Boog Powell. But folks, his nickname might change soon. Dont be surprised if they sometime soon start yelling Boggs. After the kind of terror Clark has inspired in the past month and a half in American Legion baseball, hes now conjuring shades of Bostons Wade Boggs. Stringfellow hit safely in his 15th consecutive American Legion game last Friday against Layton-Davi- s and his batting everage is soaring off the charts. The recent explosion by Stringfellow has to make Southern Utah State University happy because they plan on making the former Bountiful star one of their key baseball figures in years to come. The Thunderbirds of Cedar City not only like Stringfellows baseball skills, but have also recruited him as an offensive lineman on their football team. Hell be reporting to Cedar City on Aug. 17. 6-- Clark will be attending Southern Utah State with another Bountiful star athlete, Sid Smith. As a freshman my football year probably wont be that terrific, so Ill be looking forward to my baseball season down there. But in Sids case, he was their No. 1 draft pick in football and I suspect hell be playing quite a bit during the fall. I hope I get some playing time, but it wont be anything like what I saw my senior year at Bountiful. During the high school season, Stringfellow took some time to get on track in the hitting area, but now, everything has broken loose. Is the competition in American Legion any less tough than he saw in high school? There are good teams and bad teams, just like in high school, said Clark, But overall the high school schedule was perhaps just a little more competitive. Purdy Mayor Attest: Linda Ross City Recorder Published in the Davis Reflex Journal on July 21 1987 Issue No. 26 R-1- Dreaming takes 10 By DR. HOLLY ATKINSON Medical Jouranlist People spend about 10 percent of their lives dreaming. Many consider it a waste of time, but dreams fulfill a biological need, and can help solve problems. Most dreamers, however, are not remembered. By paying attention, you may be able to remember more of your dreams and use them in daily life. Here are some techniques to improve dream recall and make your night messages work for you. Teach yourself to remember. Before going to sleep, tell yourself to be more aware of dreams. The conscious part of your mind can help remember this desire while you sleep and improve recall when you wake up. Keep a pencil, pad and light near the bed. If you wake up in the middle of a dream, write it down immediately. You may find connections to your daily life. This can help you understand yourself better and may help you solve some problems. Beat recurring nightmares. If a recurring nightmare drives you crazy, take a few minutes before sleeping to rewrite the action in the dream. Next time it comes back, you may be able to alter the outcome. This process may also help you identify and conquer fears or anxieties you didn't know you had. of sleep tween eating and bedtime. Watch out especially for coffee, tea, sodas and hot chocolate. You might try a high carbohydrate meal at supper to help induce sleepiness. v. 'v s Avoid alcohol and long periods without sleep. Both reduce a sleep stage called Rapid Eye Movement (REM), the period in which we usually dream. Without enough of this dream time your body will develop "REM re- bound, and intense, vivid dreams, most often nightmares, can occur. Select sleeping aids carefully. When used for weeks, many sleeping pills will actually interfere with sleep. Insomnia can be more sever-e- ; dreams can turn to nightmares; and your daily fatigue can worsen. According to sports medicine experts, an increasing number of those who jog to stay in shape are turning to swimming as an alternative because of numerous running-relate- d injuries. As a result, more aerobics programs are being conducted in the water as well as out. Before taking the plunge, there are some health tips to keep in mind. This is particularly true for those who have been landlubbers for some time. Triathletes, who swim at least an hour a day to improve skill, endurance and speed in order to compete at swim distances ranging from under a mile or two or more, have many suggestions on the subject. competing. The caps not only protect the hair against the detrimental effects of cholorine and salt, but also prevent the development of swimmers car, a recurring ear infection. Goggles are another essential. Not only do they enable swimmers to see better, they also help prevent chlorine and salt from getting in the eyes. During aerobics or in crowded pools, they can protect the eye from flailing arms and legs. The most important factor with goggles is fit. With or without goggles, many swimmers still develop swimmers qye or red eye caused by chlorine and other irritants such as pojlen and dust which collect on the surface of water. Another problem triathletes mention is leg cramps. They can result from overexertion or being out of condition. When they do occur, relax and try to knead the Municipal Center.
