Show SEPTEMBER 8, 1987 L, SnDdDirtts Layton wasnt at all gracious; Lancers whip Davis in grid tilt from six yards with 1:49 remaining and Mike Williams' PAT made it By KEITH DUNCAN It was KAYSVILLE sup- 7-- 0. meetposed to be a ing or even something like an, Tm glad to see you again party. football But the Layton-Davi- s game became a disaster for one and the start of a celebration that is probably still going on for the other. The schools hadn't met in many years on a football gridiron, but Friday night changed all that. And in what was supposed to be a close game, as predicted by coaches on either side, Layton nearly owned the game as they blistered Davis and gained their second victory in a row. For the 46-1- 3 Darts right now, theyve let two get away from them and are still winless. In the onset of the game, it appeared as if the Darts were going to protect a very respected home record. One might actually have to get into the yearbook closet to figure out the last time theyd been beaten in Kaysville. Despite the fact Layton got a first down in their first series, the drive soon dissolved and the Darts and Derek Korth were on offense. Jeff Kinard kept the first drive alive with a nifty first down move and a late hit call moved the pigskin to Laytons 33. It was simply a good combination of Sean Smith and Kinard running the double wing and a crucial 1 2 yard pass play from Korth to Brian Emery that allowed Davis to knock on the door for their first score. Smith went in It was a typical beginning to so many games the Darts have played under the lights in Kaysville, at least to that point. But from that point on, it was all Layton and nothing more except for an touchdown run from a kickoff by Jeremy Chiles with just 2:39 left in the game. The Lancers started on their own 40 after Davis touchdown and went quickly down the field in nine plays for their first score. It was Dallen Smith who scored the TD and Troy Murray who booted the PAT. Much of the credit for that first drive went to Murray, the third year quarterback, whose leadership and patience paid offbig for Layton. Davis couldn't get Mike Clark or the double wing untracked in their next series and were thrown for an eight yard loss by an emerging Layton defense. Then, when Davis went back to punt, the ball was fumbled and Layton found themselves just six yards away from scoring again. Just like that, Murray was turning and spinning and hitting Rick Sparks on a scoring pass. Murrays PAT made six-yar- it d 14-- 7. Davis then made a quarterback change as Emery stepped in to lead the team. But Robbie Trujillo sacked Emery for a big loss on a third down try and Davis went back to punt again. The punt didnt have a chance as Mike Todd was in their quick and blocked the punt and recovered his own block. Three plays later it was Layton's Sahn Johnson going in from seven yards out for another Lancer TD. Murrays boot at 3:37 made it Still there was no result with Davis offense and they were forced to punt. The Lancer defense line made up of guys like Ngai Steverson, Jason Barker, Robbie Trujillo and others were giving Davis fits. Layton tried one more time to score before the half ended, but Murrays 33 yard field goal went long enough but a little to the right. Halftime came and Layton was ahead Davis came up short in their first second half possession and Layton took over on their own 27 yard line. A key 20 yard pass on third down and eight from Murray to Chris Trujillo kept Layton moving. Tom Moore and Johnson kept blistering away on the ground and eventually Johnson scored his second touchdown from 15 yards out with 4:32 remaining in the third quarter. Murray connected on his fourth straight PAT and it was 28-The coffin lid was pretty well nailed shut a little later on when Davis Emery tried to reach a receiver while in the grasp of a Layton defender. The ball was intercepted as he was going down and Laytons Chris Trujillo was in the right place at the right time to pick it off and go 50 yards for another TD. Murray finally missed an extra point try and the score totalled 34 for Layton and 7 for 21-- 21-- 7. 7. Layton High running back Sean Smith found big holes like this all night as Lancers drubbed Davis 46-12. Davis. David Jolley and Steverson made two more good defensive plays and Davis was forced to punt again. A few moments later Murray connected with Sparks on a 44 yard pass play and eventually culminated in a Murray to Johnson 8 yard TD pass. Johnson caught a perfectly lofted pass from Murray and gained his third touchdown of the day in his first game played this season. That made it 40-Keith Lawrence scored one more time for Layton in the fourth quarter on a three yard run with 7. 7. 2:52 remaining. For the night, Layton had 15 first downs compared to Davis nine. The Lancers outgained Davis in total yards, 318 to 68. Layton clearly had the edge in passing where they completed 7 of 12 passes for 133 yards. Davis could show only 2 for 6 passing with just 16 yards there. The Lancers outrushed Davis 185 to 52 while Davis had one more time rushing the ball (40) to Layton (39). There are lots of reasons why Lancers are blooming early By KEITH DUNCAN LAYTON Troy Murray, the Layton quarterback, is doing wonders with the offense and Coach Tom Moore has to like the way his defensive backfield hasnt allowed a back breaking big play yet. In short, there are several contributing factors to the success of the Layton team so far, but one area for a that has been steady-edd- y is weeks of the of play the couple offensive and defensive lines. As assistant coach Brandon Flint stated, Weve got a few talented and seasoned kids there who are hungry right now. Tyler Sessions plays center on the offensive line and junior Brian Godfrey is right next to him as a guard. The other guard is David Jolley, a returning starter from a year ago. Another second year player is tackle Jason Barker and on the other side is tackle John Rick Sparks and Terry Moore alternate as tight end. So far in a couple of games, the offensive line has partly been responsible for 481 yards rushing and 70 points scored. Coach Moore, who oversees this group, has to smile about that. The defensive line is anchored down by Barker, Terry Moore and Jolley who all alternate at tackle. Ngai Steverson and Robbie Trujil- Ye-ate- s. Coach Flint, who himself played as a major college lineman at BYU, said definitely that Barker had the college potential. But the good talent doesnt stop there. A few folks are going out on a limb right now and saying Trujillo might have a major college shot. If he doesnt make it as an end, then perhaps his opportunity will come as a tight end. Steverson, the junior, may be the best of the bunch, potentially. Flint graduated from Layton in 1979 and was a part of the state championship football team in the fall of 1978. That particular football team will forever be highlighted as having one of the most feared offensive and defensive lines in Utahs high school history, and especially Laytons past. But Flint said the 1987 gathering has the possibility to be as Its Davis Coach Jim Dickson takes frustration out on refree. Davis loses first two games, but Dart coach , players are optimistic ters. good. u Photo by Roger Tuttle - By KEITH DUNCAN KAYSVILLE Never fear, optimism still brews in the Davis High football camp, despite the fact the team is 2 in preseason games. Coach Jim Dickson could be seen driving up to the gym door at a very early hour the morning after his team had lost an uncomfortable 3 decision to nearby Layton High. Its back to the basics, back to the little things weve got to get down to turn this thing around, said Dickson, Weve got to be consistent and do a lot more of the things we do well. We played well on the first series against Layton and eventually scored, but I really dont know what happened from that point on. It was the difference of night and day. We can be consistent and we must. Weve just got to get the kids to do the things they did on that first series. Too many blocks and tackles were missed after that, enough that it cost us a victory. But its still preseason and nobody is more thankful for practice games right now than Dickson and his staff. This week Davis will play Clearfield at home again. It ought to be a solid test for the Darts with Clearin preseason and field being having outscored their opponents 0 in two games. One of the smartest statements I heard Friday night came from (Gerald) Purdy (one of the schools vice principals). He made the comment that the Darts are still unbeaten, untied and unscored-upoin league. Weve still got a week to get these kids ready for league. I just 0-- ... -- - hope the fans wont give up on these kids, because we as coaches wont. People who do give up, arent loyal Davis High fans anyway. Davis will continue to hope for the continued comeback of Mike Clark at Until he fully recovers from an injury sustained early, Davis will probably go with Derek Korth at quarterback and 20-bac- k. . . He will help provide the Darts some strongly needed leadership through the league sche-dul- e. 46-1- not a matter of whether they work hard enough, because I think they will. The real question is, whether they want it bad like we did. Are they willing to put everything aside and pay the price? said Flint. I will never forget the price guys like Doug Littlefield paid when I was playing. Littlefield played a guard and Bob Overly had the other. Chuck Ehin and I played the tackle spots. Jim Gray was the outstanding center and Jay Moore played tight end. We had a lot of natural talent then and the people we had were big, continued Flint. The defensive line was huge too then, as Ehin and Dennis Rose tied down tackle positions at about 260 pounds apiece. Flint was an outstanding end during his day and Layton saw either Kevin Moss or Jim Kidd play the other side. Its nice to talk about what could happen, said Flint, But Continued on next page 2-- Sports Tips? Call 295-225- 1 Imagine...
