Moore last week became the fourth head football coach at Layton in the past five seasons. His promotion was made possible with the resignation of Joe Wood who left Layton to take an assistant coach position at a California high school. Thats trend number one. Moore planting himself at Layton pips on High School for many years to come. He had a burning desire to become a head football coach when he moved here from Mississippi a little over two years ago and now hes got what he wanted. Nothing could lead me away right now, except perhaps a major college assistant coach position. But I dont anticipate that happening right away. I like it here. Weve bought a home in Layton and would like to raise our kids in the neighborhood weve moved to. Inconsistency in winning is another trend Moore plans on changing at Layton High, though he admits it will take lots of hard work and some time to turn that around. Layton could be the hotbed of high school football, if we wanted it to be, said Moore. I see the population of the city doubling and tripling down the road which means our school could soon become the largest in Davis County and eventually the largest in the state. Theyve been talking about bringing in portable buildings ever since I got here and now theyre doing it, the schools population is really growing. Thats a lot more kids to help build a successful program with. . I would like to see Layton become like a Davis High in football where were either winning the region title each year or coming very close to it. Theres no reason why we shouldnt be a dominant force year in and year out. Moore, who has been a head high school coach twice before, will certainly get a solid introduction to Utah high school football as a head coach. Laytons first four games will be against four of the top football programs in the state, three of which have won the state championship at least once in the past five years. Layton hosts Alta on August 28th in their opener and then they travel to meet Davis in Kaysville where the Darts seldom if ever lose a game. The following week the Lancers host the defending VHS hires Yanowsky to head grid program By KEITH DUNCAN VIEWMONT j A grammar school dream will unfold and be-- : come reality this fall when View-- i mont's new head football coach Don Yanowsky and his brother Joe begin a coaching career together on " the high school level. ; j ! tiful High however and will always think of Larry Wall as a class indi- vidual. state champions from Highland High and then things get really brutal as they prepare for Bonneville High the next week after that. I expect Bonneville to be the team to beat in our league, said Moore. Whatever they did last year, they have the potential to do it better again in 1987. Moore actually applied for the Layton High job two years ago when Brad Hawkins resigned. At the time he was serving as the head coach at South Jones High School in Mississippi. He became aware of the opening through friends hed made in the Jordan School District while he was here in 1984. The entire time I was in Mississippi, I had kept in contact with Don Gust at Hillcrest High. On one occasion he told me of the opening in Davis County and I jumped on it. My chances of getting the head job werent as good as Joe Woods because he knew some Layton people and that of course helped his credibility. But I felt good that the Layton administration wanted me to come out and help them even if I came as an assistant, so out I came. The two years under Coach Wood were great learning experiences and I wish him well in his endeavors in California. I knew from nearly the end of the last school year that Joe might be leaving and I felt that if he did go, I might have a solid chance of landing the head position. But Joes decision to go was hard to make because of some personal reasons. When he finally did announce his departure, I believe the school was caught in a hard place. They had to hire from within because we were only a week away from putting on the pads. The kids knew our system and had been working with me for nearly five weeks. A new guy with a new system could have never made it. All of that helped make it easier for me to become the head coach and I thank Paul Smith and the administration for their support thus far. Moores other head coaching experience came at Bremen High School in Georgia. Hes now been This girls elementary team recently captured the Kaysville City Elementary Girls softball championship. Right now, I stint was at Newnan High in would start, said Moore. But to say we dont have some good people there either. Its just hard to compare what we had last year, mainly because of those kids quickness. Assistant coaches for Moore and the school include Curtis Page, who Georgia where he spent 11 years there as an assistant coach. Tom and his wife Sheila are the parents of one child. The most positive position of our football team this year, will probably be the line, said Moore. On the offensive line for example, weve got three starters back in Jason Barker, Tyler Sessions and David Jolley. John Yeates, who started in one game, is also back with us. On defense, two of the front four guys are back again in Robbie Trujillo and Barker. Of course Jolley will help us there again and Im thats not instead of payments? They just cant take it lightly. Well, let me tell ya. The administration here is top drawer. They believe in the things that can be taught through athletics like making commitments and working hard to see them through. There was just no question in my mind after my preliminary interview here, that this administration supported what I believed in. From that point of view, I felt this could be a very outstanding situation. They'll work hard and along with all of that, the winning will just take care of itself.. From the time we were kids in grammar school, weve always had the goal to coach together and now ; its reality, said Don last Friday as he and the rest of the Viewmont High staff prepared for which were to start on Monday. The idea of being together on some level of football is not put on, these two brothers really have wanted to see it come true. At one time Don served as an assistant coach to Chuck Stobart at the University of Utah and Joe was a graduate assistant. Joe eventually e assistant position at took a ; Montana State and eventually saw that school win a national cham- pionship. When Stobart was let got at Utah, Don was out of a job. The decision was whether to stay in col-- . lege football or move to the high school ranks. Don gained a position at Bountiful High and Joe followed suit by resigning at Montana State ' and taking on a job at Brighton High : School. The goal of coaching together ' has always been there, even though ' it may have been a little out of focus at times. When the Viewmont job opened, I didnt even hesitate because I knew this might be our chance of getting together, which it also help coach the defense.
