Show SEPTEMBER 1, 1987 L, Falcons flex their muscles in 30-- 0 Viewmont defeat By , KEITH DUNCAN CLEARFIELD A few days after the start of the 1987 football season, Layton's Tom Moore scanned over the results of the first weeks action and made the following observation. Clearfield beating Viewmont 30-- 0 was a shocker in one way and then again, it wasnt. The reason it wasnt is because of (Brent) Hancock) He does one of the better jobs coaching in any of this region, especially the way he always has his defense giving the offense a chance to win. That certainly was the case last Friday in Clearfield as the Falcons prepared well for the Vikings, executed well and came up with one of their finest opening-da- y victories in the schools history. The coaching staff did a great job of preparing the kids, said Hancock in review, We played well on defense and offense. It felt good to shut them down. The 30-- 0 defeat spoiled the coaching debut for Viewmonts Don Yanowsky, who gave Clearfield credit for the win. They (Clearfield) made no first game mistakes and we were thinking of every move we made. We n were in out there. Were disappointed of course, but not discouraged by any means. We didnt break a football out till started because we slow-motio- two-a-da- Weve got good quickness on tne line and some experience to go along with it. Both Sam Toomer and Travis Wilson give us some experience along the line. We really wanted to prove ourselves and get started on the right foot, said Hancock, whose team now will host Woods Cross this Friday and then travel to meet Davis next week. Yanowsky wasnt happy with the play of his team, but wasnt ready to push any panic buttons. He said he saw some good effort but overall the game was typical of any first game for a team that hadnt been practicing with a football all summer. We learned an awful lot and 1 feel we will progress a long ways from our first game through our second, said the coach. d Viewmont primarily is a team who will play Granger this Friday and Bonneville next week. Granger was a 44-- 7 victor over East and Bonneville tamed Ogden 48-It takes time to get things going with a new system, but its nothing that a little time cant iron out, said Yanowsky. didnt want our kids to peak the fourth or fifth game into the season. Weve got a lot of work to do, but we feel the kids will comeback. The Viewmont coach needless-to-sa- y was impressed with the Clearfield team, saying, Ive never seen them this sharp so early in the season. Hancock said his team doesnt have any superstars but was happy with the return of Tim Gardner a quarterback. This is the first time in years, that I can remember us starter at quarhaving a two-yeterback, said Hancock. But the coach was quick to state that every other team in Region One also had a two or three year starter coming back at quarterback. Gardner, a senior, ran for a touchdown and passed for two more in Clearfields big victory. Gardner scored on a three-yar- d sneak for the first score and later got TD passed to Jeff Call (a and a to Lance Murray. Bill Spangenthal added all three PAT s and with that led 2 1 0 at halftime. Running back Monte Geertgens scored the final touchdown on a sweep, with the defense ending the scoring with a safety on a bad Viewmont snap. Its the makings of a pretty fair football team, said Hancock, ar senior-oriente- -- KEITH DUNCAN LAYTON A lot of people have waited a long time for football rivalry to flare up and this Friday in that event will finally get going. night Kaysville, Yes, its been awhile since these two schools have faced each other in football, but they finally meet again under the lights in Kaysville this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ' Geographically the two schools are as close to each other as any two high schools in the state, but for several reasons they havent played each other on the gridiron for quite some time. But the drought was ended when Davis Jim Dickson and Laytons former Joe Wood agreed to play each other late last winter. Layton opted to move Viewmont off its schedule to make room for the game and Davis decided to exchange Layton for Ben Lomond on their schedule. On paper it would appear the Darts have a tough one on the a score that could slate for Friday. Layton creamed Alta 24-have been worse than what it was. On the other hand, Davis suffered a 6 defeat at the hands of Weber. But Laytons new coach Tom Moore knows enough about Davis tradition to remark, you dont go into Davis and walk away winners too many times. He said further, Davis home field advantage is a biggie. Moore has picked that up well, despite having coached in the area for only two years. Moores assessment of Davis homefield advantage is probably right which helps make this game all the more interesting. ' The Darts will be coming off a hard week of practice as they setback in try to put the pieces together after the Pleasant View. And they must put the pieces together because if Laytons shutout of Alta is any indication of how theyll play this year, then the opposition ought to be aware. ' Actually I know very little about Davis, said Moore, We havent played them since Ive been here so Ill have to rely on other people for some help in this one. But I am aware of a few things Davis does have. I became very impressed with their starting fullback, Sean Smith, at the state track meet last year. He made a lasting' impression with me the way he beat the field in the shot put. Im also impressed with their tradition. Year in and year out they battle for their region title which about says it all. They remind me so much of some schools in Georgia where I coached Davis-Layto- long-await- ht 37-1- Region One teams start off quickly nt By KEITH DUNCAN It was a grand ole day for Region One football teams last Friday as all six teams in that region came away with victories on the opening day of 1987 high school football. The Lakers are loaded with talent everywhere and should be picked to defend their Region One title as well as repeating their trek back into the state finals. years. I know too, that Davis runs the double-winWell prepare for it, but it doesnt concern me that much. I know some things we can do that can hurt that kind of offense. I have a lot of respect for Jimmy (Dickson) and his staff. One ofour coaches last year, Russ Jones, is now coaching over there and I have a lot of respect for him. Theyll be made after their loss to Weber, so Ill expect to be ready. But well be ready too. We still have a lot of room for improvement." Davis Dickson said Sunday night that he had respect for anyone that could shut out another school like Alta and score 24 points themselves. Layton must be doing a lot of things like that, said Dickson. Alta beat to in order right Im sure a lot of people wanted this game to come off and now its here, Dickson continued to say. 1 g. 24-- S32-394- Curtis (Page) is our defensive coordinator and after he and 0, GARAGES KITCHEN REMODELS FAMILY ROOM CONCRETE DRIVES - CARPORTS - PATIOS PHONE Registration for Layton City Re- creations Fall Tennis Classic is now being taken at the new Parks and Recreation Office located in the Wave Pool complex. Jason Barker, David Jolley, Steverson and Robbie Trujillo played well for the Lancers on the defensive line for the first time out. As the coach said, Those guys just shut them down. The Lancers also received good play from Terry Moore (the coachs son) and Tyler Sessions on defense, along with Mike Judkins and Brian Godfrey. A host of linebackers saw action and they included Mike Barnes, Derek Stapley, Eric Pectol, Steve Hughes, Chris Trujillo, Rick Sparks and Brady Neerings. The defensive backs that the coach appeared proud of included Lovell, Todd, and Brian Embley. Tom Moore, one of the running backs and no relation to the coach, rushed 12 times for 92 yards. In total the offense mounted up 13 first downs. I was proud of the running backs, said the coach, They never fumbled it once which is pretty good for opening night. But now back to the defense. B. J. Lovell intercepted two passes while Chris Trujillo and Mike Todd also had one apiece. Jeff Jorgensen is really doing a splendid job with the defensive backs, said Moore. Above anything else, I want 1987 to be a year that we seldom if ever got beat by the big play. The defensive backs certainly proved the first time out they are capable of getting the job done 362 0. And, I dont know if Alta is down. I think theyll do just fine in their own league. The 24-- 0 score makes us look pretty good and I dont know if we are that good. But on that night we were a much better team than what the Hawks were, thats for sure. But the defense cant get all the credit. Laytons offense looked unbeatable at times too. The score could have been even more lopsided had a last second TD counted. It was nullified because a lineman was offsides. Third-yea- r starter, Troy Murray, did a masterful job of leading the offense. Alta was held in their first series of plays and were forced to punt. But Layton hobbled the punt and gave it back to Alta deep in their own territory. Thats when the defense showed what theyre capable of doing, as they shut down the Hawks and actually got the ball back on an Ngai Steverson fumble recovery. Laytons second score came on a bad field-gosnap. Rick Sparks was holding, but he picked up the bad snap and found Chris Trujillo d scorin the end zone for a ing pass as Layton surprisingly went into halftime with a 0 lead.
