Show V a ( . PROGRESSIVE AMERICAN Editorial ' rxsrsir or VTJfl ' "'rr . LETS PRESERVE DEMOCRACY WHERE IS OUR POLITICAL PROPHET? lead Where is the political prophet who shall, Lincoln-lik- e, tell? Promised In Land economic the into of the people security followthe sets a real forth writer what a certain is, prophet ing ing, and the words are worth committing. The Prophet is the man who sees with a troubled heart but with clear eyes the evil which reigns today He speaks in the name of the mute, he is a hand for him who cannot write, a defender for the people scattered and oppressed, an advocate for the poor, an avenger for the humble who cry out under the heel of the powerful. He is not on the side of those who tyrannize, but of those who are trodden under foot. He does not seek out the satiated and the greedy, but the hungry and the wretched. Lincoln was such a political prophet. Ilisr great heart bled for the slave in bondage and for the oppressed everywhere. He saw the evils, he spoke for the common people and defended the weak and the down trodden. And seeing what he did vowed to become an avenger. The country is not waiting for some intellectual giant to set matters right. There are plenty of great intellects but they are dumb before the countrys problems as sheep is dumb before its shearers. The people are looking for the man with the great heart that beats in unison with the wisdom of their own hearts. It is out of the heart that the issues of life proceed. We cannot have another Lincoln. He must stand alone for a thousand years. But we can have a man whose great heart has been developed in contact with his kind and which beats as truly for the common people and their welfare as the stars run in their courses. One who will bear our griefs and carry our sorrows. One who comes with a new Covenant, a Covenant inscribed upon human hearts and part and parcel of the human lives which are sorely afflicted.
