Show ByeLine by Jensen A Different Minority Group Dedicated to the Progress And Growth of Central Utah Today, I'm going to devote this column to a minority group with THE HERALD,Provo, '!tah—Page 29 _ Sunday, January 23, 1972 high visibility. It isa group too often condemned — andtoo seldom commended. There are fewer than 800,000 of this minority in all the United States. And — according to figures as of October 1971, the entire state of Utah had fewer than 1, J. For Utah County and all the Should Progress Be Delayed? An interesting interchange took place between a lawmaker and a scientist during a recent meeting of the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy. . As reported by Science magazine, £dwardC. Creutz, assistantdirector of reasearch for the National Science Foundation, advocated that the governmentfund an accelerated program which could bring about the advent of electric power from controlled fusion by 1990, 10 years earlier than generally predicted. Fusion power is to the nuclear power wehavenow asthe hydrogen bomb is to the atomic bomb. It promises to usherin an era of cheap and virtually inexhaustible energy from seawater. According to Creutz and his colleagues,it is only money, not nature, that stands as an obstacle to a practical fusion reactor. At least one member of the committee was not impressed. “I am asking whetherit is worthwhile to makethe trip in 20 years rather than in 30 years, considering the fact that we havea long timeleft after that,” said Rep. Craig Hosmer, D-Calif. ‘‘... We have to leave some problemsfor the yet unborn ... If for some unforeseeable reason it turns Where Away On Aerospace? By a curious juxtaposition of events, two unrelated, yet very much related, stories appeared in the news on the same day. The one told of the landing in Seattle of a half-ton of food, accompanied by more than $800 in cash,as a “mercygift” to the needy people of Seattle from their sister city of Kobe, Japan. The aerospace industry in the Northwest has been especially hard hit by the economic slump. In Seattle, said the story, ‘‘onceaffluent aerospace engineers gather three times a week in the rain and snow for bags of free groceries.” As a result of the Japanese shipment, embarrassed Agriculture Departmentofficials finally agreed to release stockpiled surplus food to the unemployed. Theotherstory told of an impasse on the federal Pay Board regarding a 12 per centpay increase negotiated in new labor contracts in the aerospace industry. Some members of the board hoped to limit the increase to 10 per cent, still well above theofficial guideline of 5.5 per cent. Unemployed aerospace workers standingin line for food handouts ... employed aerospace workers looking for a 12 per cent wage increse from a depressed industry ... What was it Hamlet said about things being out of joint? ‘Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party (SWP), and has been active in staging anti-Vietnam demonstrations and other agitational affairs on campuses, Also decided at the Houston meeting was to use this year’s election campaign of the Socialist Workers Party’s Presidential slate to “recruit” students into the YSA. It was stressed that “once students become i terested in the SWP campaign, they can be more easily ‘captured’ by YSA.” Incidentally, if you weren’t aware of it, SWP does have a Presidential slate — Linda a2 GUTIONS CON expertly and instantaneously make legal decisions that may require months of deliberation by the Supreme Court They are criticized and condemned for beingtoo soft, just as they are criticized and condemned for being too tough. Butsimilar questions could have been asked of any scientist or inventor or changer-of-history who everylived. Did the world really need the airplane in December, 1903? Couldn’t the Wright Brothers at least have declared a moratorium until spring, rather than go down to Kitty Hawk at the beginning of winter? Did Columbusreally haveto sail in 1492? Would the world have been any different if he had waited until 1502? Better yet, shouldn’t he have been content with pointing out the exciting possibilities of exploring the Atlantic and have left something for the yet unborn? The answer to Hosmer’s question is no, of course, we don’t need to do anything we don’t wantto do. Butall of history shows that whenever one dooris opened onto the unknown, we always find more doors behind it. Rather than limit the opportunities of his successors, Columbus’ discovery of America immeasurablyenlarged the world of his time. We could probably have always gotten along without the airplane, but the Wrights’ invention has had the totally unforeseen result of immeasurably enlarging mankind’s vista by opening the door to space travel. The world could probably get along without fusion power, too — if we drastically cut our energy demands and our numbers and our standard of living, and if we could convince the underdeveloped nations to forget about a betterlife. Fusion power is one more beckoning door, whose key we are closeto fitting in tne lock. We know not whatreally lies behind the door. We know only that we can no more refuse to open it as soon as it is within our power to do so than Columbus could have willingly turned his ships around on the afternoon of October ith. Jenness for President; Andrew Pulley for Vice President. . On the afternoon of the final day of the three-day gathering, two movies were shown. ‘One was a 1932 film of Leon Trotsky making a speech in France. The other a YSA picture titled “How to Make a Revolution in the United States.” This film lasted 30 minutes and included considerable footage taken during the April 1971 anti-war demonstration in Washington — organized and conducted by SWP and YSA. What’s YSA? According to a report at the convention, YSA now has 56 chapters on campuses throughout the U.S. Carefully not disclosed is their location. It was also claimed that 345 new members had been signed up since the start of this school term; again no hint as to where. The Young Socialist Alliance, affiliate of the Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party,is the largest, best organized and most aggressive radical youth group in the U.S. Its youthful members are thoroughly indoctrinated and dedicated Marxists. They function under rigid regimentation — and seemto like it that way. Manyof them havesurreptitiously gone to Cuba as participants in the so-called “Venceremos Brigade” — presumablyto cut sugar cane for dictator Castro, but actually to be trained in guerrilla warfare and making revolutions, ‘The YSA policy to “radicalize”’ high school students, particuiarly blacks, is not exactly new. Whatis new is the public avowal of such a plan. They give strength to laws. Without them our cities would become jungles. They are as precious to society as doctors, lawyers, teachers and preachers. They belong to all the races of man. They are our police officers ... members of a proud profession.
