He then pitched her body out of his automobile, drove to the home of bis brother in Frederick and shot himself to death with the same . gun. Miss Whitter was known at Adamstown, where she made her home, as the "village pet" Friends declared today she bad frequently rejected Shepherd's attentions. On her death bed this morning, the girl sobbed out the following statements to State's Attorney Wm. M. Storm: "I had a date last night but Cliff Shepherd called me up. He was insanely Jealous and he wanted me to marry him and I wouldn't He wanted to take me home and I wouldn't let him. He said, 'Let me take you to ride until train time.' I got in his machine and when we got beyond the sand hole, about two miles from Frederick, he stopped the machine and went to the rear and came back with a pistol, and said he was going to kill me. "I pleaded and pleaded and said to him not to do it but he said he was going to kill me. He then shot me and I jumped out of the machine. I couldn't use my arm and I knew then he had shot me in the arm. I ran and he followed me. I ran about a block. He shot me again when I was running. I climbed over a fence. He caught me and dragged me back. Several machines passed by, but he told them to go on. He put me in his machine and I picked up the pistol and I think I shot him, but I don't know. He pushed me out of the machine and came out after me. Then he Jumped in the machine and drove away." Miss Whitter was found In the road by three small boys who carried her to a hospital. Shepherd's wife and baby died on the same day in 1918 during the influenza epidemic. Shepherd . Goshen is the third community in Utah county to go over the top in the Castle Gate disaster fund, according to reports that reached Provo Saturday. Soldier Summit reports that the work Is progressing there and that they are nearing the quota. Encouraging reports were also received from several of the other communities of the county and the drive will be completed some time the first part of the week. "There may be one or two towns in the county which will not reach the quota which hag been assigned to them," said J. William Knight in commenting on the reports. "It appear as though in some of the towns the committees have not taken hold of the drive with the enthusiasm necessary to put it over. Where the committees have the right attitude on this matter, the drive is being put over successfully. A letter was received Saturday Govenor by Mr. Knight from Charles R. Mabey congratulating the committee and the people of the county over the prospect of completing the drive. The governor expressed himself as appreciative over the manner in which the people of Utah had responded to the cry for help sent out by the fatherless children of Castle Gate. Funds are badly needed at the coal camp recently visited by the enormous calamity, said the letter and the assistance rendered by the more fortunate citizens of the state will be greatly appreciated not only by the children and the mothers but also by the state officials and the state committee in charge of the drive. The drive in Provo is still progressing. The quota had not been reached by Saturday night, according to T. F. Pierpont, chairman of the drive. Renewed effort will be made during the first part of the week to push the drive to a successful conclusion. r - N, Who , "", ALEX HEDQUIST, offers prize for best song "On to Provo."
