"Scattergood Survives a Murder," Mur-der," is at the Academy today, bringing to the sceen for the first time Clarence Budington Kelland's famous character in the role of . a sleuth. Starring Guy Kibbee, this new production furnishes thrills and comedy to compete with the most successful films of popular, homely home-ly American background. Primarily Pri-marily a Jfumorous photoplay, this production features the interesting interest-ing premise that two aged spinsters spin-sters are murdered, after having willed their fortunes to a pet house cat. Seen in support cf Guy Kibbee in this production is a group of capable performers. Included are Wallace Ford, John Archer, Margaret Mar-garet Hayes, John Miljan, Spencer Charters, and many more well-" well-" known players. Carrying a good part of the comedy honors is Willie Best, the negro actor who achieved outstanding out-standing film success in recent roles. He carries an important part, the assistant to leading man John Archer. .Companion feature is 'Lady In a" Jam," featuring Irene Dunne, Patrick Knowles, Ra!.ph Bellamy, and Eugene Pallette. War and Mystery Hits to Appear On Uinta Screen Against a flaming background of war, "China Girl," opens today at the Uinta in an exciting ro mantic adventure of a beautiful girl, defying violence and terror, and a daring Yank, flying and lighting for victory. Teamed for the first time. Gene Tierney and George Montgomery are co-starred with Lynn Bari Victor McLaglen appears as a two-fisted soldier-of-fortune who peddles his loyalty to the highest bidder. The film opens with a thrilling escape from a Jap prison by Montgomery, continues through many exciting channels, and its exciting climactic sequences are said to. have some of the most realistic bombing scenes ever filmed. Supporting players are Alan Eaxter, Sig Rumann, Myron Mc Cormick and Bobby Blake. In the second attraction, Mike Shayne scores again! This fast talking detective, played by Lloyd Nolan, faces many thrills and chill3 in the mystery film, "The Man Who Wouldn't Die." The feature of the campaign, which will start May 27th, is" to give bond purchasers a chance to sign their names to scrolls which are then placed in cabins of Billy Mitchell B-25 bombers. Heralding the drive, a special ' trailer will be shown in theaters explaining to prospective bond purchasers the method of "buying "buy-ing a bomb to buy a bomber to send your name to war." Exciting Drama Via Twin Bill Now at Strand "Journey for Margaret,' presenting present-ing child star Margaret O'Brien is ? t the Strand today depicting an exciting story against the lurid background of bomb-torn London. The picture is a dramatic adaptation adap-tation of W. L. White's memorable memor-able book on his experiences as an American war correspondent. Robert Young and Laraine Day are featured with little Miss O'Brien and Billy Severn, a year her junior, portraying the love-ab'ewar love-ab'ewar orphans adopted by Young in London. How he restores their bomb-shattered nerves and brings them to America, forms an absorbing story. Supporting players are Fay Bainter, Nigel Bruce, and Elizabeth Eliza-beth Risdon. Second hit is "Dr. Gillespie's New Assistant,", starring Lionel Barrymore, surounded by a youth vil cast of comparative screen newcomers, Susan Peters, Van Johnson, Richard Quine, and Keye Luke. The plot is furnished by the doctor doc-tor grappling with a strange case of amnesia that develops into an intriguing dramatic situation. Abbott, Costello At Their Funniest In Paramount Hit Bringing- to the Paramount screen Damon Runyon's "It Ain't Hay," Abbot and Costello make their first appearance since ..they were honored as the nation's No. 1 box office champions. Heralded as the most comical in which the two comedians have starred, this picture has Grace McDonald, Mc-Donald, Cecil Kellaway, Eugene Pallette, Patsy , O'Connor, and Richard Lane in its cast. Extra ordinary added feature is the ap pearance of Leighton Noble and his orchestra. The hilarious story involves Bud and Lou in a strange case of mis taken identity. Two horses, how ever, are the principals in the error, one a nag and the other a handicap favorite.When the comics are suspected substituting one steed for the other, the action of the film is said to excite more laughter than any corresponding situation in ther previous hits. Miss. McDonald and Noble contribute con-tribute the romance and music in the speedy plot. Musical numbers num-bers are "Glory Be," "Sunbeam Serenade," "Old Timer' and "Hang Your Troubles On a Rainbow." Half -Day Holiday Slated by Stores In Spanish Fork Zoning In an address before the Provo Rotary club Friday, George Smcath, Utah county planning di rector, outlined the procedure that has governed decisions with re spect to housing construction in this area. Befcause it is generally felt Provo is going through a municipal munici-pal change in iits growth, zoning must be recognized for the protection pro-tection of all, Mr. Smeath pointed out. The individual home must be encouraged, and the apartment unit of the highest quality, that approximates -the usefulness, the accommodations and the privacy of the private dwelling is most desirable and also should be en couraged, the speaker said. SPANISH FORK Stores of Spanish Fork will close for half a day each Wednesday afternoon. It was decided at a director's meeting o fthe chamber of commerce. com-merce. The purpose of this action ac-tion is to give the merchants anl employes a chance to devote the half day to war effort. They ex pect to assist farmers and other industries in every way possible to meet the labor shortage and the closing will give the merchants time to meet the many requirements require-ments of the OPA and other fed- 'ftsfa'l regulations. The businessmen expressed a willingness to cooperate cooper-ate and the half 'holiday will begin be-gin Wednesday, May 19. Gen. Kenyon A. Joyce, announced today. The Ninth service " command. embracing states of California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Montana and Ari zona, was ordered "with eight other commands to put the in creased furloughs into effect within , specified time limits. The war department in Washington Wash-ington said the optional furlough period after induction and before Action-Loaded Havy Portrayal At Scera Monday "The Navy Comes Through," a thrilling action-romance, first to come out of Hollywood dramatiz ing the Battle of the Atlantic, starts at the Scera Monday starring star-ring Pat O'Brien and -George Murphy. Hailed as an unusual saga, this film tells of the men who take the freighters through the U-boat infested sea lanes and tells the thrilling tale realistically. Murphy has the role of a . navy officer dismissed from the service because be-cause of a fatal accident aboard a. cruiser, and O'Brien plays the part of a hardboiled chief petty officer whose testim6ny is responsible re-sponsible for Murphy's disgrace. America's entrance into the war causes Hurphy to enlist as a seaman sea-man and he finds himself a member mem-ber of a navy gun crew commanded command-ed by O'Brien. The romance twist to the story is-furnished by the chief's sister being in love with the ex-officer. Dramatic hiehljghts of the ab sorbing plot are furnished by a fight with an enemy submarine, a battle against hostile planes, the capture of a Nazi supply ship loaded with torpedoes, and a clever scheme to trap a while pack of U-boats. A final battle with two more U-boats results in a satisfactory satis-factory conclusion to the action loaded picture. YOUTHFUL FAME At the age of 18 Joan Leslie can claim the distinction of having hav-ing played the wife of an Academy Acad-emy Award winner.
