' - ROW CO OS WITH n:u STOIl CHAPTER XXII 1UUY and Clara Jenks came out of .Guarvenius house '-together. It was a very hot afternoon. Summer had suddenly descended on the land.. The asphalt streets were soft. the reek of gas smoke was nan seous. and every city sound was ln- tensLlcd a hundredfold; and yet it was only, the beginning of spring. NCIara Jenks was there because Guarvenius had been kind enough. through Judy, to make her free to use bis big rooms for practice. Her part in the theater "duologue required re-quired some acrobatic and gym nastic dancing, and she had evolved ome screamingly funny stepsAA She was almost a transformed i;eing. these days. Prosperity spoils mall-natured folk, but it makes ilgnatured ones bigger still. Clara Vas blossoming. Her blunt face. umorous eyes, and monsp-brown 'iilr would never be beautiful, but lie was not nearly so plain as she Jad been a. few weeks ago. I As they turned into one tf the juay ttreets, the traffic held up a , arge limousine in which sat a man Jnd a woman. The man was hand some, well' past his youth, with lines la his bronzed face that told of hard living. He had a grizzled mustacre and dark hair. Hewas " leaning toward the woman, gazing at her with absorbed interest, talk- Z animatedly, tbvlously .finding a her the one thing that mattered to him in life. His companion was quite young. Bhe had yellow-brown hair that grew round her pale face in rather ! fantastic curls. Her eyes were vivid turquoise blue. Judy's chief Impression of herjwas that she wa3 bored, and that ;she looked cool on this sultry day, swathed in trans-patent trans-patent black, with? a large lacejhatr and that she wore a long string of pearl3 of fabulous size. t 'That's Gertie Clarendon, that Fas." said Clara excitedly. tDo you remember her at the Victorian? She was only In the" chorus. - "Poof! How cool she looked!" sighed Judy. "Yes, I remember her name." A - "She is .irrsvEverglada now, , Clara went on. .'That's her husband hus-band with her. And there she 1 3. sailing about in a car as big as a bus and wearing pearls as big a3 marbles! "He must have been crazy," re peated Judy absently. "lie was dead crazy. You see. that's the way with glrl3 when they're clever, Judy." . "But you said she wasn't clever." k "Not clever at her job. I meant: but clever as the devii when '-It came to hooking old Everglade, you bet! She 'wasn't the kind of girl a chap like that vtarriea!" "But he did marry her!" Judy said with a sudden snap, like a fish biting. v "Oh, yes, ho ' married her ?ll right." "Why. then?" "You goose!;-. Because he was niad about her and couldn't get her any other way." . . "Oh!" said Judy. . It was a whispered exclamation, Just a soft expeiliug of her breath.' Thoaght3 were taking shape in. her mind. Fury and hatred and revenge re-venge had been seething there for days, but never any coherent plan. There was none now only the pic-lure pic-lure of that cool, white-faced, blue- eyetU-yellow-halred girl In the big car, and the handsome man hangings hang-ings over her, his eyes alight, his pleasure hers, his will and bis life Just a couple of toys in her hand. That was an Idea! Everglade had been mad about Gertie Clarendon, and he had to marry her. Perhaps In the beginning he bad thought that she was "not the sort of girl one could marry." Perhaps she had been to him only a "little Judy Grant": .but Gertie Clarendon had been clever. Judy laughed, as If something had amused her. Before she reached home Judy bought an evening paper. One of the first things she saw was this announcement?. Jasmin .sings and Gosstelvltsch plays at Mr.. Bruce Gideon's big party on Park Avenue tonight. Judy read the half column de voted to Gideon's entertainment very carefully. There was'Aa de scription of the salon, which she learned for the first time was the most beautiful room In New York, and of 'the music room, where she had danced to Guarvenius. And Gregor Gosstelvltsch, who had played for her, was to play to the guests, and Carlo Jasmin, the greatest great-est living tenor, was to sing, and the flowers were to cost so many hundreds, and the supper was to be served at separate tables in the pic ture gallery on the floor above. She read that Madame do Toros, Mr. Gideon's sister, was acting hostess; ' that she was famous for her elegance and perfect taste In dress, and that she would probably wear thf magnificent Albenza pearls. GREEN 5 TERMS Ccatcr Si - . - u jUBim by- CHELSEA UOUSE. Judy's thoughts went back to the girl in the car. She would probably be there Gertie Clarendon. At any rate, she could be there; but little Judy Grant couldn't oh, dear, no! ' ."-":""" v . ; ;-AA:" CHE did not know a single person 3 iff Gideon's real world only the two or three uninteresting men who had been to lunch with them, and who obviously belonged to' his business busi-ness life. For the first time she learned from the paper that he was interested In Transatlantic Oil, from which; he derived part of his enormous fortune. She really knew very little about the man. She had not seen Gideon since the day ; when she had overheard the two. men talking in Stornaway's Storna-way's studio. ::; . A a AH te rest of the day she brooded. Frequently there rose'Tbe-fore rose'Tbe-fore her mental vision the pale, cuii-framed face "of Gertie Clarendon, Claren-don, a chorus girl, no better than herself. ' A That night Judy was at the Lemon Grove, and her kindness lifted poor Dumont Into the seventh heaven. Two afternoons later she v.ent to Stonaway's. She was In radiant1 spirits. She bad had a wonderful lesson that morning. Guarvenius had actually praised her and called her "ray bird" in Polish aboutxa dozen times. He had also said that she would be ready In less than a year. He wanted her to go to Paris, and told her that ishe was not to worry about expenses. Was sho not like a daughter to him, and would he not be repaid a thousandfold when she took the world by storm? Judy really h?gan to think that she must be going to be a great dancer. Somehow she did net .mind what she took, from Guarvenius. Ha was making plans, he told her, for her to live with a relative of his in Paris, a Polish lady married to a Frenchman. Theywould look after her. He wasn't going to have Judy .running about the Quartier Latin as she did about Greenwich Village. She might get Into mischief mis-chief and spoil all his beautiful plans. . Stornaway welcomed her eagerly. "I've been wondering what had become be-come of you," he told her. "I stupidly tore up your letter and forgot your address. "Fact Is, I've been awfully busy, said Judy. "I didn't think you were so very keen on the sittings, Mr. Stornaway ;vT)ut I ought, to have let, you know when the week was up." I shall be very glad to have you back," he said In his urbane way, which always suggested that he lived in a world with which there was no fault to find. "I haven't dared to touch that sketch of you. We must get to work!" She laughed. "Oh, but that If not work, Mr. Stornaway! You Bald you were only doing It tor a joke." "I didn't say 'for a joke, Miss Judy. I said 'for my. pleasure, be corrected, smiling; , '' A ."" -- OREM SOCIETY - Miss Ann Volice of Rock Spirngs, Wyo., spent a week visiting with Miss Katherine Sumner. I'm booked to -deliver that canvas in AugustAA - They got to work at once-AJudy in all the panoply of Tudor xoyalty. She always felt more uncomfortable In the heavy skirts, the sweeping sleeves, and the close red wig. " When the sitting was over, Stornaway offered her tea; but she refused It and bade him goodhy. "I say. Miss Judy!" He detained her with a light and kindly touch on her shoulder. "Don't think me meddlesome, but I've been rather worried about you. ; I know about your dancing and all. the hard work it' means, and model work can't pay you anything to speak of. . Aren't you rather overdoing It? I should hate .to think of your being over-worked, over-worked, when a little help ' She knew he was not speaking for himself, s it were. Some Infallible Instinct told her that She threw back h or head and laughed at him, with mischief In her pansy eyes. "Mr. Stornaway, you pay ma about three times as much as anybody any-body else," she said; "and your work is much' easier. I'm much obliged to. you, but . I don't want any help." The artist's eye3 rested for a mo ment on her shabby clothes. "Have you seen Gideon lately?" he asked .Irrelevantly. . "No not for several days. Were you at .that grand party of his?" "Yes,"x .Stornaway ' replied. It was a-greatshow; Wonld you like-lo like-lo have been there?" . "Rather not!" she snapped. "What would I be doing there?" "Gideon thinks a lot of you, Miss Judy. "Does he? I've got to learn why; He's been very decent to me about tho dancing." "He believes In you. A man Hko that can be a very good friend." "No doubt, Mr. Stornaway. -I'm very grateful to Mr. G Ideoh for what he has done." 'A :A-A' She wa3 not giving herself nway. She was "quite convinced that ths artist was pumping her, trying ti get at her real thoughts about , the rich man. No doubt Gideon had' told him to do. so. A Mr. Punch wanted, to know whether she was. piqued .or alarmed by his sudden neglect Well, he was not going to know. Her nebulous plan was re vealing itself as a definite game. Stornaway made an appointment for the following afternoon. She felt sure that Gideon had put him. up to it, and she was pretty certain that the millionaire would turn up himself. I Sho was right He strolled In, as If by chance, toward the end of the' sitting. Stornaway stopped painting paint-ing at once, and Judy, released by a nod from her stiff pose, yawned and stretched her slender arms high above her head.
