By 47 to 36, the senate rejected an amendment to the $330,000,000 tax bill, sponsored by Sen. Robert M. LaFollette, R., Wis., which would have increased the normal tax rate from 4 to 6 per cent and imposed a scale of surtaxes considerably con-siderably higher than at present.
