Show FOR 100 YEARS... SYMBOL AND CENTER OF WORSHIP 100 years ago during General Conference . . . today, with untold millions receiving conference message. Since that memorable day in October, 1867, when President Brigham Youngoffered the first prayer in the great Tabernacle, countless numbers of people have sharedthrilling moments of Inspiration .. . souls have been enriched .. . hearts touched... eyes andears filled with the beauty and meaningof words and music. Always a symbol uf Worship, the Tabernacle has become,through moderntechnical miracles, the very center of Worship forliterally millions of peopieall over the world whojoin with the Saints assembled on Temple Square during Conferences in a program of sermon and song. Eight Prophet-Presidents of the Church and hundredsof General Authorities have spoken from the podium, and the famed MormonTabernacle Choir and Organ, which celebrated its two thousandth broadcast performance of “Music and the Spoken Word” on December 17, 1967, has been heard around the world. In addition, monarchs, Presidents of the United States, famed artists, captains that promises another century ofservice to people everywhere. Little did the pioneers dream thattheir Tabernacle would become one ofthe world’s unique religious landmarks. Brigham Young’s vision of a great Worship and Conference Center becamereality underthe prayerful planning of William H. Folsom and Truman O.Angell, Church architects; Henry Grow, master builder; Joseph Ridges,first builder of the organ; and hundredsof inspired men whobuilt the Tabernacle entirely by hand. These were men deep in the desert wilderness, far away from the world, isolated in their poverty, not long since homeless, but men with faith in their hearts and a dream in their hands. The strong hand-hewncolumns, the pioneertimber and wooden nails, the immense arching roof, the organ front... richly carved and paneled and fluted, crowned with pyramidaltops... stand unaffected by storms, time and fame. The Tabernacle begins its second 100 years with all the dignity and gracethat has of industry and throngsof the world’s great and humble have stepped markedits service for the past century. It beckonsto all nations ... through its many open doors for a day or evening ofinspiration. all men... who searchforspiritual and artistic refreshment. . . The devotion, dedication and conviction of 100 years ago are and enfoldsall within its everlasting conviction thatlife is limitless, blended together with the hope of tomorrowina rich tapestry eternal and good. The historic Tabernacle stands proudly. . . of pioneerheritage, ever-expanding faith and technical ingenuity a monumentto the greatness of men and the powerof God.
