I came by this conviction from a "minor" study of the history of democracy which should be a part of every freedom-loving American's life. The idea of democracy is very old. The Greeks tried it as early as 600 B.C. But because the people were passive, they let it get out from under their control, which we in America, are doing. And they lost it to a tyranny which was the forerunner to the aristocrat or autocratic form of government that enslaved the people of Europe for nearly 2000 years. Not because their democracy was not a good form be-of government to begin with, but cause it got so infiltrated with vice and corruption and greed for wealth they lost it. The same thing is happening in our American government today. A summary of how the Greeks lost their democracy is expounded in the-dange- will not be communism nor union leaedrs that will destroy American democracy. They are only looking for a share of our crumbling democracy. We need not look outside our own government for the evils. Nor do we need to look outside for a cure for them. It was not an outside force that destroyed the Greek democracy. Our sickness, as was theirs, is within; As long as we lull ourselves into the false conception thatjwe have a sound and freedom, we are in danger of losing all our freedom, as did the Greeks. It is true that we have freedom in America, but much of it is of a false nature. The true freedom in America is to the classes, and not to the masses. And therein lies the danger to aJJ our freedom. Freedom has got to be a full freedom to all; not a privileged freedom to a few. While the Greek democracy did function very well at its beginning; in the part that Socrates termed timocracy, it did not fare so well after the, element of wrealthy classes began to creep " into it. Soon conflict bgan to rise as the wealthy classes began to think that they should have more voice in the government than the less fortunate classes. With that conflict .ended the first phase of the Greek democracy, called timocracy, and the oligarchy government came into power. The freedom that was intended for all the people, soon became the freedom of the few. For in the transition the poor lost their right to vote. And that, in essence, is what the defenders of the city charter, tried to tell the November election, and it took a court decision to put that right on the ballot. That denial alone must have cost the city charter 3,000 to 4,000 votes. It should have cost them all the votes. When the Greeks lost their right to vote, they soon lost their democracy. We have the same condition developing in America today. With a quotation from Socrates I shall end my reasoning for voting against the city charter. "On the other hand, the men of business, stooping as they walk, and pretend not even to see those whom they have ruined, insert that is, their money their sting into someone else who is not on his guard against them, and recover the parent sum .many times over multiplied into a family of children; and so they make drone and pauper to abound in the state. "The evil blazes up like a" fire; and they will not extinguish it', either by restricting: a man's use of his own property nor by ani other remedy." One could get the idea from ..iSditor Herald: some of the "Mailbag'r letters You seem to have a reader who that the reason the Provo" has the strange Opinion that ciga form of government was charter defeatrettes on't harm people. Gerald Henrie J Editor Herald: - : Editor Herald: ' ' ':';".v' Finds Basis for Oppbsingf Charter In Decay Of Greek Democracy; America Following Same Line Dia- logues," in which Glaucon and Socrates, two Greek philosophers of the fourth century B.C., dis cuss the issue of the "Four In ferior Types of Government timocracy, oligarchy, democracy and tyranny," and how from the better they degenerated to the worst. The history of the Greek democracy is written in dialogue fash ion, and reiterates how the Greek democracy passed through the four stages of government as mentioned. A democracy is a government of the people and by the people, based on freedom and privilege alike for all, but. which is becom as it did in ing in America' a privilege class by Greece governmental control to a few. Our democracy has become contaminated with wealth, greed, lust and the desire for power among the individual citizens, who because of their wealth think that they are entitled to special priv ileges, and they are now at work destroying our .unconsciously democracy as the Greek's men of wealth and privilege destroyed their democracy more than 2,000 years ago. The Greek democracy was des troyed, not because the fault was in the democracy, but because unscrupulous people took privileges they were not entitled to and got control of the government. That is what is happening to our American democracy and will continue to happen if we don't gh W. J.
