The American flag represents the greatest nation iu the world, the United States. Ia it we are privileged to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The iieople of this land hare made it what it is. Columbus found America a great land and Americans hare mode it a great FLAG DAY' ESSAYS. Of the many essays submitted in the Provo Elks flag Day contest on "What the Flag Means to Me," the two printed in The Herald today were adjudged the best of the senior and junior high school classes. While all of the essays were considered above the ordinary by the judging committee and worthy of publication, space compels The Herald to make this limit of two. HERE'S MORE ABOUT FLAGDAY STARTS ON PACK ONE. I the ages," said Professor Merrill. "For 147 years this flag has waved over a free people. It is the prayer in our hearts tha it shall endure for rentnries yet It has waved in glory and victory and will continue to do so. "When the flag was hoisted 147 years ago it gave to the nations of the world the understanding that now a free nation had been launched. Many people at that time could not understand that we had emerged from bondage into freedom. "During the reconstruction period there were honest men that were possessed of the idea that we should go to Europe to invite a royal person to come here to be king over the nation. They failed to realize that it was impossible to give such a man the ideas necessary to govern a free people. "This is not a nation of warfare. It is a nation of peace and liberty. It demands freedom at all costs. One great march of liberty has been engaged in by their people. "We have changed our. notions In many respects, however.. Time was when we opened the headgates of emigration and invited the people of other countries to come here and abide with us. Not so any more. We have shut the gates of emlgra tlon and have told the people of other nations to remain where they nation. "They say we have lost political leadership As we have not lost leadership In other fields of endeavor, so I say we have not lost it in politics. A democracy never can lose its leadership. It Is an autocracy that says leaders must be born and bred. In our country leaders rise iip from the masses. "What is our duty then? "It is for us to develop political affiliation and sympathy and carry on. We should have little sympathy with men who have no time to participate In politics. . "Let us fight for that which we think is right, but not lose faith in the majority. We must struggle for that which we think is right but after decision has been made let us be governed by the majority. "We must develop group thinking. We must think in great terms. We must not be clannish and endeavor to have our own little clique rule. A democracy is only in danger when the will of the majority is not permitted to rule."
