Shallow thinkine . leads to absurd deductions. "Saving money by not spending money '' is a tallacy on its face. Money is only a measure of value and a medium of exchange. The harder times are tor tne separate units of society the more effort should be put forth by society itself to in- crease me activities oi we wnoie, inu evenng out conditions so that a farier distribution o property results. A simple example of this reasoning k our own situation: Hundreds of citizens are out o employment, hence are an expense instead of an asset to If the "roads are built and society. the public buildings erected during such a time, then the whole communis making the same headway that ity . .t . i. tne larmer aoes wno seizes upon tne rehis to paint wagons, rainy days pair his fences, etc. Aside from this immediate benefit we must not lose sight of the fact tnat roaa ouuaing is me very uest in restment any community can possi bly make, for transportation and intercommunication is the key to all highly developed civilization. Every dollar saved by better roads is that much wealth added to the whole com - munitv. I Editor Provo Herald: I observe that you have opened the columns of your paper Xo an expression of opinion on public Improve ments. This is commendable if those giving their opinions will give real facts, and base their opinions upon Bald facU . It is my opinion, that as far as possible and consistent with reason, employment avenues should be opened this spring, but in order to do so, I do not believe that the taxpayer should be deceived Into the belief that this can be done without expense to themselves. I believe that the lack of trust today of th txapayer is because of the fact that he has been led too often to eblieve that improvements could be made and the other fellow pay the We desire to dispose of our present stock of mounts, etc., to make room for our new moving picture camera which we will install in the near future. The government has made an appro priation of a certain sum of money (175.000,000). for assistance in hard- surface road building throughout the United States. Of the sum total appro priated, less than one million will come to the state of Utah. This mil lion dollars Is to be apportioned to the various counties of the state, Utah county being promised her share of the amount From the best information I can obtain, Utah county may receive from $105,000 to $110,000 of this money, and if the same is expended on projects already begun it must be on a basis of Utah county being in the class, while that of new projects on the basis of but we must bear in mind that the sum total we may receive' is about $110,000. Now how much of the taxpayers money can be matched with the government money? Only about $35,000 at the three-to-on- e basis, The sum of and $100,000 at the $109,000 is still In the road fund, therefore there is no occasion to raise taxes in order to match the government money, but if the present pro- grain is carried out It will cost the tax payer 1300,000 addition or more. By bonding this could.be distributed over several years. Now if the taxpayers desire these improvements, which no one would question? but that they must pay the bill, and let us not deceive them with empty air promises that the govern ment or someoLe else is going to pay s of the bill. all or DON W.
