Owens, Advertising Manager. Harry Butler, Circulation Manager. Mermountain Advertising Representative, Leo L. Levin, Ness Bldg., Salt LaVe Entered at second class mall matter June Provo, Utah, under the act of March 3, 1879. at the postoffice, 1911, the year, 13.50 vtwcription price 6, cents the month 30 Sworn Circulation 1915 FARMER EXPLOITERS Senator McNary of Oregon and Representative John W. Summers of Washington has laid bare one of the fundamental iniquities from which the farmer has suffered for years, and they plan to correct the evil through legislation now pending. In brief, they propose to establish the licensing system in vogue generally during the war and under which the Secretary of Agriculture would be able to govern to a large extent the practices and functions of those who handle farm products. The bills there are two of them would not only give to the Secretary of Agriculture the authority to investigate the operations of dealers, but upon complaint of any person the business of any dealer or handler. The Secretary might also provide for a Board of Arbitration for adjustments and disputes in which any approved handler or dealer has a financial interest involving the grade, quality, con ditions, value, deterioration, handling or distribution of farm products. The important point in the arbitration plan is a that the finding of such a board would be prima facie evi dence in the courts. ' Senator McNary is a practical man. Perhaps no Senator has a more fundamental knowledge of the difficulties of the farmer or a deeper" appreciation of the injustice under which he has suffered at the hands of the middleman, and it is hoped the legislation he has prepared will not be emasculated in committee by theorists and political economists who left unchecked are likely to sink the ship before it gets under way. The outrageous exploitation of the farmer at the hands of the middleman must come to an end, and McNary will bring a good deal of it to an end if cfven a free hand. pro-visi- on PROVO'S NEW INDUSTRY effort has been made to develop and commercialize this asset. This locality is unique in having the only slate beds of any consequence in the western states. The company which is going ahead with this development claims that they can produce slate for roofing in its various forms cheaper than even the freight charges from the east. This development should bring about a substantial growth in the wealth of this community and of Utah county as a whole. It is only by the development of these natural resorces' that a country grows rich and prosperous. The company is endeavoring to raise the finances necessary to install machinery and other equipment, here in Provo. It is hoped that they will not be compelled to go outside m order to finance their enterprise. According to statistics offered by the company a very attrac tive return should be realized. From the looks of the results of their investigations the legitimacy of their claims cannot be ques tioned. They have a ready market, they have investigated produc tion costs and have figured out the possible returns based on a volume of business which only equals a small part of the amount of slate now being used in these western states. At the same time they have the raw material in vast quantities. Contrary to the rule in mining and oil ventures, these people do not have to dig down in the ground for something which may not be there. These enormous slate ledges and beds can be seen by merely going up the canyon and looking them over. Here is wishing success to tl a new Frovo Slate Products Company. NsW Bijjfjer, , J' Coven! It i true that no American rlt climbed high on the business ladder, nor progressive far in any other way, without the aid and leadership of a central organization, commonly known as a Chamber of Commerce. Many of the members have neglect ed wonderful opportunities of serving the public, of aiding in the program of civic advancement. How? By neglecting their Chamber of Commerce obligations! Population has flowed here and there in search of this natural wealth which comes from the ground. It may be in the form of bounteous ' crops, in large deposits of iron or "what not." This locality is especially gifted In the variety and amount of natural resources. One of the more recent of these to be brought to the attention of the public is the large slate deposits found in Slate canyon. While the existence of these deposits has it Christian or no, gives man a faith in a superior power to whom is been known for many years it is only recently that any concerted he goes when his present life is done. Belief in a as inherent in man as is his love of companionship, and it is this future hope, which the animal has not, that is the elevating force of his moralism. So, though we thrill and feel a just pride in men who jest at death, should we be surprised?
