The press dispatches have announced that the president has been forced to withstand the importunities of statesmen and friends who urged upon him the advisability of intervening in the kexican troubles that peace with some assurance of continuity might be established and a government of stability inaugurated. So far the president has withstood fliese importunities and has steadily refused to be drawn into the Mexican troubles, At the same time the war department has been active in inquiring into the condition of the nationaj guard of the states, and bills have been, proposed giving the president power to call these into active service in defense of the, Pep-- , nation or for Invasion of foreign lands, the of the militia a the regular army or- part per bill making garuzation Tlf the necessity should arise, plans for the mobiliza-of the militia and regular army near the Mexican ion t border have been perfected. Commanders of the national guard have been "keeping in very close touch with the war department," and though no orders have been sent out, it is inferred that the "close touch" between the war valu-abl- e department and militia authorities of states includes . suggestions for mobilization. There may be no political" significance in all this, although there are many who profess to see in it a use of the Mexican situation as a means of promoting, the political outlook of the present administration. Indeed, the conventions to nominate' candidates are awaited'with interest, the bejief growing that when the nominations arc made and thexan fying intervention will .ensue in Mexico. The well known e military prowess of one of the prominent candidates, a of leader a make him regi would logical presidency ment in a Mexican invasion, provided he was not otherwise engaged at home, and this is said to account for his political ambition, as under no circumstances would a presidenUal candidate e permitted tojead his army, as verenme, kmgs Dt iong-ag."'" The sjnwer has been that the centers for iron land steel products have been established in the east so ljbng that the raw material to the njamifaetory rather than taking the manufactory to the raw material is so well establish- ed, that it seemed folly to think of an early development of the iron deposits (ji LTtah Before the committee of the House of Representatives ""Investigating the "steetindus- -, try, however, Thomas F. Cole gave some interesting in,formatiou which must encourage even the most optimistic of Utah's boosters. The. day will come, said Mr. Cole, vwjien Utah will be an. important center for the manufacture of iron and steel. It has been hinted that the Goshen FJatsrin this county, would le an ideal spot Tor the new industry and " it some day have a city of may be that as great a population as the capital a Pittsburg or Iron-to- n of Utah adding untold wealth to the commonwealth. Demand for iron and steel during theTast ten years lias grown fasL That demand would be' reduced. The "proper, development of the Utah iron deposits requires the investment oflarge capital, and this will be supplied only when it is shown that the cost of production canjbe. lowered sufficiently to insure success, .While the iron" ore bodies from which the supplies of eastern mills are drawn are large, the cost of transportation has been heavy. The cost of moving the I Hah raw material to eastern iactories it will be necessary, likely would prove prohibitive, hence ' to bring the mills here. .f With.coal and iron ore, and' the passibility that electri-ch- y will some day enter into the manufacture of steel, Utah may well be expected 10 enter upon an era of manufacturing which will place the commonwealth near the top of the column in iron manufactures. Utah's wealth has not been touched; only a. little of the cream has been skimmed from the surface.
