' BODIES OF VICTIMS Gain In Population From 1920 To 1923 More Than Twenty Year Period Previous The gain in population from 1920 to 1923 was more than the gain in the previous twenty years by 3 2 9, according to compilations of the Provo Chamber of Commerce for the mt mbership drive which will be con-du- c ted this week. , The census report of Provo from I860 to 1923 gives the following mation: In 1 800 the population was 2030, In 18 70 this was increas-- ' ed to 2384 or an increase of 354 in 1' n years. In 1S80 the population increased to 3432 or an increase of 104S in ten years. In 1890 the population is given as 515 9, an increase of 1727 since 1SS0. In 1900 in-jf- j the growtli continued and reached 6158, which was but an increase of 999 in the ten ve'ars from 189 0 to 1900. By 1910 an increase of 276 7 was registered and the population of the city placed at 89 25. Ten years later. in 1920, the population reached an increase of but 1455. 10,303, Three years later in 19 23 an increase of 4 551 was recorded and the citys population set at 1 4,852. To the coming of the Columbia Steel corporation is attributed the remarkable growth during the three year period from 1920 to 1923. Other interesting compilations by the Chamber of Commerce is that of home building in ProvQ. In 1921 but 67 new homes were built here. In 1922 the number of new. homes Increased to 138 and in 1923 this number was nearly doubled, when 247 new homes were constructed. In 192? there was also a greater extension of telephone lines in Provo than in any other citv in Utah, and the same was practically true of pow erand light lines, while bank clearings i219 2 3- was nearly double those of Tz2. . Incessant efforts all day Saturday!, and Sunday, and also part of today, failed to bring to light the bodies of Don Allred, 35, of Lakeview and Mark Hyslop, 24, of Grandview, who lost -- their lives in the heavy snow-slid- e "which occured at the. Bridal Veil falls in Provo canyon, Saturday morning at 9:37 oelock. experienced Saturday afternoon, powder men and volunteers under the direct'on of Sheriff J. D. Boyd, and railroad officials commenced opwill erations which it is beljeved lead to the recovery of the bodies. Water released from the dam above the snow slide, and blasting from both ends of the gigantic mass of. snow resulted in tlie ioavy cunt tc-cut- - througharlyin, the afternoon. Sunday morning worlc wfis' recommenced with vigor, and while results seemed negligible great masses of snow were carried down the Provo river. No trace of the miss-- , ing men has been found as yet, however, but with the drift being rapidly depleted it appears plausible that the bodies of the two victims will be recovered shortly unless, they are swept down the Provo river under the loosened snow. The snowslide in which Allred and Hyslop lost their live's is believed to have been one of the most terrific in the history of Provo canyon. Commencing more than a week ago, the Denver & Rio Grande Western branch line to Heber City has been blocked intermittenly by the season- al snowslides induced .by the spring thaws. Friday morning the left fork of the Bricjal Veil Falls drift fell, hurling a mass of snow 50 feet in depth and 300 feet in length down Provo canyon, and completely blocking traffic. One man, P. E. Carter, hardy escaped with his life ' when he was thrown more than 2 50 feet by the concussion, which was of such a nature that trees wre on Page J) , - : g, oi was received at 3 oclock this afternoon from the Bridal Veil Falls, the scene of Saturdays snow slide, to the' effect that the bodies of Hyslop and Allred had not as yet been recovered. The channel through the snow drift had been widened materially and water, which had been shut ofin the morning, was again turned in the channel to carry out the snow which had been blasted off the main- - body. Efforts are nowJbeing- - made to subject the drift to hydraulic pressure through .utilization of the Utah Power-umLight company pump at the Bridal Veil Falls, which it is believed can be used to advantage by joining pipe and one hundred feel of fire hose. Between fifty and seventy-fiv- e men are employed on the recovery work, and it is not improbable that the bodies of the two victims of the slide may be found later this afternoon. Word -- Professor George W. Fitzroy and Merle Taylor are the nominees for president of the Provo Rotary club to succeed the present incumbent, City Judge J. B.
