The paper of the late Dave Day says: An Associated Press dispatch from Denver to the Democrat last night brings confirmation of a story published in this newspaper some time ago relative to what is one of the most important land deals ever re corded in behalf of the San Juan ha sins advancement. This is the statement that 5000 acres of coal land at Fort Lewis will in all probability be taken over under a leasing arrangement by the Pacific Coast Steel company tomorrow. This land is owned by the state in the name of the agricultural school commission and has been declared to be the richest deposit of coking coal in America. Tests made of this coal for agents of the Pacific Steel company have proved it to be the best product for coking purposes ever uncovered in this country. The steel people have been negotiating with the state land board for several months for a lease on this Fort Lewis coal land. It was thought that the deal would be closed along in April, but the parties were not able to get together on various clauses having to do with the price to be paid and the length of time the lease wa3 to run. The Durango Exchange sent representatives to Denver to assist in the making of a lease that would be fair not only to the state school fund, but to the Pacific Steel company. As a result the leasing fund will be enriched by a very considerable amount and the assurance that the steel people will develop this territory without delay, According to estimates furnished when the beads of the steel company were here a couple of months ago, it will cost them better than $2,0d0,000 to open up these coal propertied. The company has agreed, it is stajted on good authority, to guarantee the Santa Fe railway a production of 2000 tons of coal per day as soon as the southern outlet is built, and, as a ; matter of fact, it is this guarantee that has virtually cinched the building of th4 new road. j 79c 35c NO CHARGE.
