Last publication, April 11, 19 22. , 1 4 Nimrod Kills Biggest Buck The biggest white-tadeer ever killed in the Kootenay country in Canada, fell recently to the rifle of Richard Peterson, who ranches near the soldier settlement of Lister. It was drizzling snow as Peterson was scouting through a stretch of tall timber on a mountainside. As he walked along a cowpath among the pines a buck stuck its antlered, head from behind a thicket screen and looked at him out of curious, drowsy eyes. Peterson dropped on one knee and took aim. The buck took fright just as he pulled the trigger. The report of the gun scared up twenty other deer that crashed away in all directions through the underbrush. A great buck, the largest Peterson had ever seen, with a fine spread of horns .dashed directly toward him. When it seemed the animal would run him down it shied off and stopped broadside on in startled amazement within thirty feet of the hunter. Peterson killed it with a bullet neatly placed behind its shoulder. It weighed 384 pounds after deer being dressed. For a white-tait was a giant. Pioneers of the region say it is the largest deer of its species they ever heard of. The Kootenay was once a secluded fastness rarely penetrated except by trappers. It is now' a fine farming country noted for its orchard fruits.
