Miss Telling of the work done br; with the In Provo Downey liof the Provo librarian and brary board, the report says: "Her attention was first given to creating more enthusiasm in.lhe eommunity.Thlslwas done by giving lectures at- - the UnJrTy, tfore the public high school, at the teachers Institute and before the womens clubs. After giving a short sketch of the history of library work she explained the use of the library, ita reference work, value of the periodical files, etc. This talk was followed by classes of pnpllt from the eighth grade and high school coming Into the library and receiving instruction in the system of of cataloguing., classification books, use of the periodical Indexes and cardi catalogue. A great deal of Interest was shown by the pupils and they are now able to do their own reference unaided when in subjects are assigned to them connection with their class work. During the year, the report says, the- value of- - the library has been considerably augmented Uy collection through the schools of old maga. zines, We have received something over 22,00 magazines," also s ' number of books, saya the report. "These magazines . were gone . over carefully and the ones to .be bound were placed In volumes, while the remainder were given away. Any duplicates found were sent to other libraries. - From ; thia ' collection: ..together with what the library already had, we were able to send 200 volumes to the binders. We hound everything listed in the - readers guide with the possible exception of four or five. Our efforts were next directed to the book circulation. The membership registration waa low and the book circulation waa not what it shonld be. In order to remedy the defects, at Mias Downeys suggestion the city directory was checked against the library directory to find out who was not using the library. We purchased about 5000 cards and As 5.00 worth of stamps. the checking was completed the names were ' gone over and cards addressed to those- not ' registered. The number of cards returned was not large owing to the tact that the directory way a year old. The circulation, however, was increased the first month 1824. The cards are still coming in. The sending of cards direct to the borrower majt it necessary to eliminate - the signature of the guarantor. . It is still required, however, on the' cards of borrowers not living In the city. ' Borrowers cards algo were given out in the schools down to the third grade. - A Hat of the employees of the Knight woolen mills was gnd cards sent to them, num, bering" about 150. Efforts have been made by , the Provo library board, to secure the of citizens concerning which the report says: J.., A year ago One of our putau, spirited citizens, formerly ft In imber of the board, presented the library a $50 collection of bird books.
