MAKE UTAII LAKE AN ASSET j A short time ago the state fish and game Commissioner in a teport given to the newspapers attempted to tnake the people of this state believe that Jhe carp should not be claned out of Utah lake because 'so many poor people are eariiing a living fishing for this fish. We were surprised at the time to read this statement, and just to verify our belief in regard to the matter, inquiries were made at almost every point where any amount of fishihg is done and in every case the same reply was made. - Fisherman on Utah lake are very anxious to get rid of the carp, for they not only destroy the spawn of the bass, but keep the water of the lake inuddy and roiled. As a food fish they are valueless, except for feeding the fish at the hatcheries and userf of that kind. People will not buy them because of the bones and when they are caught by seining, most of them weigh less than a pound. r It might be well for our fish and game commissioner to look into the offer made by the Kansas Fish and Game department relative to stocking Utah lake with the Blue Channel cat fish, for this new variety to Utah would in a measure do away with the carp and furnish the Utah people with a fish food that is considered by many par excellence with the game fish now in the lake . We have right at our doors one of the best bodies of fresh water in the United States for the production of fish and through lack of proper information relative to fish culture that great resource has been reduced to practically nothyfg as a commer cial asset. The sportsmen find it had to get interesting fishing on the lake on account of the scarcity of bass and trout and only good fishing in small catfish remains. A few years ago we were able to advertise the lake as the Fisherman's Paradise, today we would be more in harmony with conditions existing to advertise it as the Fools Par-adisand the time for a change is ripe. It is within the power of the fisli and game detriment of this state to better the condi- I 4 ;t ur e; INDUSTRIES FOR DEFENSE All the world recalls the difference between the mobilization of industries in Germany and in England- when the great war broke. An inventory of the capacity of munition plants and factories supplying other military needs, is being taken.
