In the fall of 1899 he went to the Southern states on a mission where he remained for over two years. Upon his return he worked for the Smoot Investment company, but soon afterward he accepted a position with the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pa. For over fourteen years be represented this great institution in this section and also in Central and in Southern Utah. This line of work brought him in constant contact with big business men of the day and public enterprises. For eight years Mr. Smoot has been a member of the school board and was instrumental in bringing about the' erection of the High school and many other important steps in educational advancement.' He has traveled extensively in the interests of his business and since 1911 has been treasurer of the Western Fruit Jobbers association.
