Foremost among the AS needs of the county is the system of permanent highways hich have attracted the attention of the people of this section for some time. When the talk of bonding Utah county for - half million dollars started a few years ago, many of our most influential citizens threw up their hands and declared that such a thing would sink the county into hopeless debt. An epoch of education was needed to convince the people that not only a bond for a half million, but for a much larger sum would prove, instead of a burden, a real asset to the county. That period of , education has been progressing very rapidly and today the live wires of Utah county are very enthusiastic over the outlook for a permanent high-wa- y with proper loops to place the large farming sections on good concrete roads. This idea of permanent road building did not originate in our fair state of Utah, although we are better blessed than any state in the Union with vast supplies of cement, sand and gravel for this purpose. It originated in states where material is hard to get and if the well laid plans for the eoming year prove correct, Utah county will become known as the first county in the region to build a permanent high - inter-- mountain W If JV T - h r v IT way through the center of its population for a distance of nearly fifty miles. In these days of high cost of living and the -- -- of industry to the highest possible point of efficiency, the question of good roads stands out boldly as one of the greatest needs to the farmer that he might compete with his fellow farmers everywhere. We have in Utah county a class of shadow of a doubt their ability to do big things, farmers who have demonstrated beyond the For the past two or three years, they have been getting better acquainted with their needs and have found that road building leads all else. Farm surveys have demonstrated that every farmer in Utah county is losing more than the price of his taxes for a permanent highway by being forced to carry his products to market over the ordinary temporary reads whieh a few years ago were considered good but today are not good and places the cost of hauling too great to enter the field of competition with a proper margin o! profit. A few years ago we did not have the automobile in the field, and in consequence our roads stood the wear and tear for years where today -- they are gone in a season, and the enormous expenditure for temporary improvements will practically pay the bond issue and our farmers will profit very materially by the reduced cost of hauling their products to the market. ' and every manufacturer will reap a harvest. Every merchant and business man will gain through thin movement. Utah county people are believers m home industry. They are to a great extent home buyThe year 1917 is approaching with marked T ers. They are also believers in developing home . rapidity and throughout the entir e staterthere is products and in employing home labor. Should" a spirit of enterprise and a desire for active dethe people of the county vote for the bond issue when the opportunity presents itself, there will velopment. That spirit is pervading Utah county! be an opportunity, for every man in Utah county It is in the air and everybody is catching it. who so desires, to assist in building the system While we are in the midst of this spirit of adof highways which will follow.
