A case in hand is that of the very narrow escape of Clara Kimball Young and a special taxi driver in the making of a scene near the Santa Fe railroad tracks in Los Angeles recently. The continuity called for a mad drive from the railroad station to St. Annes hospital and the driver lost no time in making the ride a reality. The delay that occurs in the scene is supposed to take place by the ay FRAMK liPACKARDMotx? fvhr&ct2 passing of a freight train and the lowering of the gates at the crossing, preventing the taxi in making the Thrills crossing, thus giving the suspense Rbatunce necessary. In approaching the gates or cross arms, the driver applied his foot brakes, which failed to hold and jammed on his emergency brakes. The machine skidded into the protecting gates, smashed them into bits, shattering the windshield of the taxi, cutting the driver and throwing Miss Young from her seat in the taxi to the floor. Though bruised, shr wasnt badly hurt, but her terror while the freight was passing was genuine, for the taxi had skidded to within three feet of the passing freight, which passed by unaware of the near tragThe scene was Note edy that impended. to the ball THE TIME OF HIS LIFE remade because the photographer in game Owing every Wednesday his terror ran from his camera to asPat OBrien met Mike Casey com- sist will there only be one show the and missed would what star, ing out of the local police court. in the afternoon, at 2:30.
