HUGIJES FOB PRESIDENT is the Republican national conven-When , r j. tion nominated Charles Evans Hughes of New York for president and Charles W. Fairbanks of Indiana for vice president of the United States, it struck the keynote to - rtj Americanism. It also sounded the death knel foF the' vacillating policies which have made all true Americans blush for shame so often during the past four years. The announcement, of the nomination of Hughes was greeted with delight in all parts of the country and now that the great justice can speak and declare himself with propriety on the great issues of the day, the people need have no fear of his position. Hughes is an American citizen of the type desired by all. He did not seek the nomination, but when nominated he immediately took steps to tell the American peopleTwhere he stood. In his brief statement of acceptance he said : I stand for an Americanism that knows nu ulterior purpose; for a patriotism that is single ail complete. Whether native or naturalized, of whatever race or creed, we have but one country and do not for an instant tolerate any division of allegiance. I believe in making promp provison to secure our natonal security. I believe in preparedness, not only entirely adequate for our defense with respect to numbers and equipment in both army and "navy, but with all thoroughness to the end that in each branch of the service there mahe the utmost efficiency under jhe most competent administrative heads. But we art devoted to the ideals 6f honorable peace. .We wish to promote all Vise and practical measures fdr the just settlement of international disputes. In view of ourN abiding ideals, there is no in this country.- - We danger of militarism ' have no, policy, of aggression; no hist for territory; no zeal for strife. It is in this spirit that we demand adequate provison for defense and we condemn the nevgusable neglect that has been shown in' this matter of firit national importance, Wemusf have the strength which self respect demands, the 8." Our severest tests will come after the war is over. We must make a fair and wise adjustment of the tariff, in accordance with sound protective principles to insure our economic independence and to mantain American standards of lving. We must conserve the just interests of labor, realizing that in democracy, patriotism and national strength d must be rooted in justice. In preventing as we must, unjust discriminations and monopolistic practices, we must still be zealous to assure the foundations of honest business. Particularly. These workers go into every city, .town and hamlet in the state pf Utah and we believe that their influence will do much to counteract Jhe influences of such men as R. W. Brawn and his agents who are working go earnestly for the brewery interests, in the state. But not only are the mutuals working for this great cause. The people themselves, are determined to win' this year and regardless . of. the efforts put for by the brewery" hired gangs that may work the. state .the people will win and Utah will join the list of prohibition states.' We must take up the serious problems of transportation, of interstate and foreign commerce, in a sensible and candid manner, and provide an enduring basis for prosperity by the intelligent use of the constitutional pow ers of Congress, so as adequately to protect" the public" onTthe one hand and on the other to conserve the essential instrumentalities of progress I stand for the principles of our civil Service laws. In every department of govern ment the highest efficiency must be insisted upon. For all laws and programs are vain without efficient and impartial administrator In his brief statement Justice Hughes declared himself so - definitely that even Colonel Roosevelt himself could find no cause for complaint. The fondest ambitions of the colonel for national integrity can better be realized through 4 Justice Hughes than through any man in America and we believe that Teddy himself will be one of the strongest supporters he has before the campaign 'has developed far. Hughes will win and the Progressive wing will do its part toward his success.
