NEW YORK, Nov. 30 (U.E) The days of the Notre Dame football empire appear to be numbered, Just as Yale, Harvard, Michigan and California the Notre Dame of the past-r-were forced to make way for new rulers, so mustv Notre Dame. Like its predecessors, Notre Dame doubtless will retain ranking among the nation's gridiron leaders, lead-ers, but it is unlikely that the South Bend institution again will rise to the heights of the Rockne era. "Army Game Disaster Although the decline of Notre Dame empire will be dated from the tragic death of Knute Rockne, the first actual indications of dis-intregation dis-intregation were shown iri Saturday's Satur-day's 12 to 0 defeat by ArmyrFor then it was thatrarteani previously hailed as the strongest in Notre .Dame's history was defeated and all but disgraced by a slightly regarded re-garded rival, previously beaten 26 to 0 by Pittsburgh, and 14 to 13 by Harvard, and . tied by Yale. Notre Dame teams have lcit games before, but almost invariably they have looked good in losing. This same Notre Dame team did that very thing against Southern California a week previously, but on Saturday it was unable to accomplish ac-complish evert that. "Off day" or no, Notre Dame was made to look pitifully ineffective and but for two brilliant plays by Ray Stecker'of Army, the spectacle which New York annually counts upon for its one outstanding contest con-test of the year, was a dreary, uninteresting un-interesting game. Eighty thousand spectators sat in stunned silence as the debacle progressed. pro-gressed. Every 'time Notre Dame got the hall, the crowd almost could bo seen to think, "Now we'll see something. some-thing. " They'll open up and show Army sbme-jealfootball." Fans Lose Faith But as Army continued to smash through and break up Notre Dame's plays behind the line, the ever-nckle New York fans lost faith and at the finish, they were cheering Army's every move. True, Notre Dame has two justi fiable alibis in the heavy field and in the heavy schedule played before meeting Army, but Notre Dame scorned excuses in her hey-day and is not offering them now. The defeat by Armygave Notre Dame a record of six victories, two defeats and a tie for the season. Many '.teams ; would be proud of such a record against formidable competition, but to Notre Dame it is a keen disappointment. San FrandsoJ!lJ" a WallopsDe Paul SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 30 (U.R) Another intersectional victory was chalked up for the" west today with San Francisco university's one-sided defeat of De Paul uni versity, Chicago, by a score of 3 to 7. The Fogmen had no trouble scoring scor-ing ort the visitors in their game before 20,000 fans at Kezar stadium here - yesterday. They made a touchdown, in each of the first three periods and three more in the final period. , A brilliant pass that netted 70 yards gave De Paul its lone score in the second quarter.
