Show THE COMING CAMPAIGN. . i J n view of the coming bitter campaign cam-paign for the latter part of Bummer and the early fall, the democratic convention con-vention held in this city on Saturday, while its harmony, strength and spirit were very re assuring to the d mocata waa very dispiriting to the republicans. It was expected that the late wealer excitement here and in the territory would very greatly disturb the harmony har-mony of the delegates, but in this the republicans reckoned without their hosts. It was very epeedily ascer tained that the grand old party pilaw and order was an unit upon this subject sub-ject as upon all others. They were opposed op-posed to deifying the hosts of wandering wander-ing industrials and to permitting them to interpret the laws, r everse the decisions de-cisions of the courts and otherwise to run matters to suit themselves. The democracy has always been the conservator of order and property rights. In their eagerness to find a flaw in the armor of democracy the republicans re-publicans made a vast mistake in assailing as-sailing the Chief Justice and Judge Smith for their firmness in repressing the lawless manifestations of the com-monwealere. com-monwealere. The contempt of all fair minded, law loving men in Utah has been won by their leading papers in holding men who are above suspicion, sus-picion, up as base conspirators against the liberties, rights and privileges of American citizens, because the? happened hap-pened to be poor and in distressed circumstances cir-cumstances because of an all-prevailing depression in business occasioned, in the first instance, by the long continued con-tinued policy of demonetization adopted by the republican party. Neither the democrats of Utah county nor of Utah territory are ashamed of the attitude of the democratic judges on this mattei. They are proud that their judges had the nerve to stand by, the law and put an effective stop to the spoliation of property and tne disregard dis-regard of property rights exhibited by the oommonwealers in this territory. In order to get in this childish work the republicans have been compelled t) assume a perfectly untenable position posi-tion and that party in Utah today stands arrayed as the especial champions cham-pions of the form of lawlessness repre-reBented repre-reBented by this whole commonweal business. Fortunately time enough is left between now and the election to enable en-able honeBt men of eyery party to investigate inves-tigate and determine the gravity ot the fault committed by the party and its accepted mouth pieces, the Standard and the Tribun e. Xor will it hurt the democracy that these two papers continue con-tinue their assaults upon its brave judges in order to throw off from their own shoulders or weaken the force of the odium earned by their course. Indeed does it seem that all things conspire together for the advantage of the democracy in the pending cam-pain cam-pain . It is not to be wondered at that the intelligent democracy of Utah county feels elated and the republicans correspondingly depressed. This will grow and increase as the days go by until when the isBue is joined at the palls it will be found that law-loving republicans will have cast their votes for the democratic nominees. I |
