Show l k PUBuc OPINION Baited by Sam A hlnr Hlhe cei talzation of wealth is the caption of a good article in the last iisue of the Millard County Blade and we taKe the liberty of giving our readers read-ers some portions of it It is a very significant sig-nificant fact that within the past few years the wealth of our country has been by the aid of republican class legislation centered in the hands of a few President Lincoln even in his day saw the tendency in this doctrine and he exclaimed Labor is above capital and deerves much higher consideration The money power will endeavor to prolong his reign by working upon the prejudices i of the people until all the wealth is aggregated into a few hands and the republic destroyed We have seen his words fulfilled and today see the condition of our country as shown by the figures taken from the New York Recorder a leading republican republi-can nrcrnn D I According to figures from reliablo sources there were in the United States in 1891 12002000 families with an assessed wealth of 862032000000 of which there were 70 families worth 82625000000 90 families worth 1026000000 100 families worth 1440000000 132 families worth 968000000 360 families worth 1650000000 I 1775 families worth 4036000000 6000 families worth 7500000000 7000 families worth 4550000000 11000 famIlies worth 4125000000 14000 families worth 3229000000 16500 families worth 2722000000 30000 families worth 4000000000 75000 families worth 4600000000 200000 families worth 4000000000 1 000000 families worth 4500000000 2000000 families worth 4000000000 9020000 families worth 7215000000 Thes figures show that 40000 persons I per-sons own over onehalf of the wealth of the United States while onesixtieth part of our people own over twothirds of the entire wealth of the country j and taut 250000 persons own 75 percent per-cent of the United Staes These tables also th w that threefourths of our families are not worth over 8600 to tie family while onefourth are not worth over 14000 to the family It will also appear by a small calculation that one half of theee families are worth less than 200 to the family Prior to I860 there were vary few millionaires in the United States and the above table showing the present wealth aggregated into a few hands within thirtyfour years is extremely alarming and means that unless a change in the industrial and commercial commer-cial laws of the United States from the centralizing tendencies that have characterizd the legislation the past J three decades the republic will soon be destroyed I Even President Garfield was opposed to the policies of hid party on the tariff question on account of its favor to one clasa and took an intermediate ground and today it he were alive he would favor the taritf reform policy of the democratic party This is what he said in congress onApnl lst1870 in one of his speeches We have seen that one extreme school of economists would place the price of all manufactured articles in the bands of foreign producers by rendering render-ing it impossible for our manufacturers to compete with them while the other extreme school by making it impossible impossi-ble for the foreigner to sell his competing compet-ing wares in our nurket would give to people no immediate check upon the pucea which our manufacturers might fix for the products I disagree with both these extremes I hold that a properly adjusted competition between home and foreign products is the guage by which to regulate reg-ulate international trade Duties should tie so nigh that our manufacturers manufac-turers can fairly compete with the foreign for-eign product bat not so high as to enable en-able them to drive out the foreign article arti-cle enjoy a monopoly of the trede and regulate the prices as they please This is my doctrine of protection If congress I con-gress pursues this line of policy steadily we shall year by year approach more nearly tj the basis of free trade because we shall be ino re nearly able to com pste with other nations on equal terme I am for a protection which leads to ultimate lice trade Another republican giyes evidence of the condition of our country at the present time and when you reflect pon his statement can you wonder at the people turning his party out of power in 1892 Can you wonder at panina and their terrible results to the masses of the people This is what CDauncey M Depew recently said Fiity men in these United States have it in their power by reason of the wealth which they control to come top gather within twentyfour hours and arrive at an understanding bv which every wheel of trade and commerce may be stopped from revo ving eveiy avenue oi trade blocked and every electric key struck dumb Those fifty men can paralyze the whole country for they can control the circulation of the currency and create panic whenever when-ever they will |
