Show Our Next Congress, i Washington, .Nov. 7. Reports received re-ceived up to 9 o'clock tonight indicate the next eenate will have forty democrats, demo-crats, forty-one republicans and six populists, while the attitude of the successor of Senator Harris, of Tennessee, Tennes-see, is still in doubt. In this claarifi-cation claarifi-cation Senators Stewart and Jones, of Nevada, who were elected by the republicans, re-publicans, but who have announced their, separation from that party ard Governor Tillman, who will aoabtle s be elected by the so-called independent indepen-dent democrats of the South Carolina legislature are placed in the populist column. Tillman will probably vote with tbe democrats, on organization and Stewart and Jones, of Nevada, and Peffer with the republicans. This would throw the balance of power in the hands of populists. THE HOUSE, Washington, Nov. 7. When Chairman Chair-man Babcock, of the republican congressional con-gressional committee, left the republican republi-can headquarters tonight he said the reports received during the day give the republicans 230 out of 356 members of the house beyond persdventure, while there was a possibility of securing secur-ing 27 additional members. If these claims are realized it will give the republicans 257 members, or a majority ma-jority of 99members. According to the claims of the republicans repub-licans they will be able to-Eecure tho votes of at leaet 30 of the JM : states, in case the next presidential" election is thrown into the house, as they will have either the solid delegations from that number cf states. Chairman B&bcock Baid tonight: "The returns indicate we have secured se-cured control of the next senate by a a majority of 1 to 3 without counting the vote of North Carolina, which undoubtedly elected a republican legislature." |
