By BRUCE SOLBERG Herald Staff Writer Voters are heading toward the polls today to select their candidates and decide on three propositions to change the Utah State Constitution. If approved by the voters. Proposition 1 would allow all hospitals and nursing homes to have a tax exempt status. Currently, these institutions must demonstrate that they do charitable work in order to status. have a Proposition 2 would give farmers a property tax exemption on expensive farm implements such as POLITICS: couple fractured on votes (Continued from page I) she said. "The Republicans drink pink punch and aren't as noisy." But Cathy doesn't think her daughter's observation is very dependable. "I never drink anything pink," she maintains. The Godfreys also keep a lid on potential arguments by limiting their discussions "90 percent of the time" to issues. "It's easy for me to disagree with a Republican but still re- spect the man." said Randy, pointing to Utah Republican Sen. Jake Garn as an example. Sometimes, they admit, their discussions get a little heated and "the kids get quiet," said Cathy. But while they may disagree about how something should be accomplished, they usually agree on what needs to be done. They also avoid discussing political strategy, but are able to verify or dispell rumors and report the accurate information to their respective parties. A major point of agreement for them is their mutual belief in the system. "We would both prefer to choose between two strong candidates rather than vote for the one who can do the least damage." said Cathy. But don't look for either Godfrey to be changing sides in the near future. When Randy became local Democratic Party chairman, one Republican friend complained to Cathy. "How could you let him do that?" "I can't even make (their soni Collins eat his beets." Cathy "How can I make Randy do anything'.'" two-part- tractors. Proposition y RUN: today 3 makes several changes in the public school system. It would officially form a board of regents to oversee higher education in the colleges. Approval of the proposition would also guarantee a free education for students up through eighth grade. Also included in the proposition is a statement which would allow schools to enter into agreements with church institutions. Voters in Utah County will also have the opportunity to vote on whether they would like the county to look into alternative forms til government. In Utah County races, many of the candidates are running unopposed. The most interesting race in r Utah County is for the county commission seat between Brent' Morris (Ri and Marie D). VanWagenen has received the support of several past commissioners, both Democrats and Republicans, while Morris has received endorsements from about every big gun Republican in the state, including Gov. Norm and Sen. Orrin Hatch. The four-yea- r commission seat is sought by Malcolm Beck (Rl and David L. Greenwood. Beck is the former mayor of American Fork and Greenwood has served as county commissioner in the past. Nina Reid iRi Utah County recorder has been challenged bv Charlotte R. Mecham (D. Those running unopposed for positions in Utah County government include: Ronald M. Smith, assessor: William F. Huish. clerk: L. Sundberg. auditor: David R. Bateman. sheriff: Clyde R.
