November S. 1980 Local GOP Qlad, Democrats Sad By DAVE KEYLEN BeraM SUff Reporter As night is U day, balck to white and good to evil, so it was between Utah County's Democratic and Republican headquarters during Tuesday's election night. As the night wore on and election returns assured a Republican sweep through Utah and most of the nation, jubilation abounded at the GOP Headquarters in Orem while losing Democrats sat in front of color televisions in disbelief. Through most of the evening a subdued attitude prevailed at the local Democratic headquarters in Provo, as a generally young crowd milled around talking to one another and awaited election results. Despite President Jimmy Carter's speech conceding the election to Ronald Reagan, Carter-Mandat- e posters remained on the headquarter lobby walls as party members hoped for a miracle. "Maybe we didn't win but we were still right," one campaign worker said as she watched the Reagan landslide on television. While tired Democrats wallowed in disbelief, a gala atmosphere with music and laughter prevailed at the Republican headquarters in Orem. With food being served in one 'v'' large Ui"- -. sion screen was set up in the restua rant's other conference room with cheers and clapping filtering into the banquet area as results of state elections were announced on television. "I feel so thrilled," one worker said as she watched Ronald Reagan give his victory speech. "I never believed I'd feel so thrilled." A roar of applause came from the crowded conference room as the told the television president-elec- t audience that the Republican party could control one house of Congress for the first time in a quarter of a century. Even while gubernational candidate Robert Wright conceded in incumbent Scott M. Matheson, the partisan Republican crowd continued to cheer and applaud Wright's statements. In Provo, as the Democrats final strong hold Gunn McKay went down to defeat, remaining workers quietly closed shop and went home still wondering about the Republicans crushing defeat. "With McKay losing," one worker now have an entire said, "we Republican county." t If 11' W I .... x Vj5j-- N, ly, .,.. j . i a.... I . He had won the primary election over incumbent R. Phil Shumway, who finished second. Several weeks after the primary race, Shumway decided not to pursue another term on the school board. With another four years on the board secured, Priday said tightening the district's $58 million budget would be one of the board's biggest responsibilities. "We've got our work cut out for us," Priday said. "People want to cut taxes, but how to do so will be our big challenge. "I think we can expect great things in the future with our new superintendent." The incumbent praised Mrs. Anderson's efforts, saying she ran a good "above board" campaign But District 3 wasn't the only tight contest. In American Fork, incumbent Leland Priday held off challenger Reese Johnson to secure his second term on the school board. Priday finished with 3,391 to Johnson's 3,056. Following the election win, Priday admitted he wasn't surprised that the voting had been close. "I've never known anyone to have campaigned as hard as Mr. Johnson did," Priday ssid this morning. In the only district race not sporting an incumbent, Brigham Young University professor Richard Heaps defeated his opponent Sally Taylor to win the board seat for District One. 140 Herald SUff Writer Convincing Alpine School District 3 board challenger Claudia Anderson that one vote doesn't count would be a tough assignment. In one of the tighest school board races in Alpine District history, incumbent Daniel B. Fugal retained his seat on the board as he edged Mrs. Anderson by a mere four votes. In District 1, top primary vote getter Richard Heaps easily defeated his opponent Sally T. Taylor, while incumbent Leland Priday held off challenger Reese Johnson in District 2. "I really felt v were going to win," Mrs. Anderson said this morning. "We knew it would be close, but I never thought it would be this close." Although Mrs. Anderson led through most of the evening, when the final votes were tallied, Fugal had won 4,102 to 4,098. According to Utah County clerk Bill Huish the final outcome of the District 3 race will not be decided until all absentee ballots are counted Monday. Huish said most of the ballots are from outside the Provo-Orearea and added he was unable to deterif any votes will affect the mine how many school board race. "Actually I'm sorry to see the race finish that close," Fugal said today. "When I went to bed last night I was 157 votes behind, so I am pleased with the outcome.
