Sheriff. e (Special to The Herald.) PRICE, April 10. Sheriff Ray Deming of Carbon county was shot in the leg Thursday morning in the hills between Rolapp and Standardville, two Carbon county coal camps near by, by Andy Strakey, believed to be one of the two men who staged the holdup at Dividend, Utah county, last Saturday night. ; Deputy Sheriff L. H. Beebe of Standardville heard of Strakey's presence in Standardville early Thursday morning. While the officer was trailing him in the hills, Strakey doubled back to Standardville and held up a poolhall. Word of the holdup was immediately sent to Price, in response to which Sheriff Deming and several of the officers set out on the iiunt for the bandit. The posse overtook Strakey in the foothills and the bandit shot Sheriff Deming in. the left leer just below the knee. No sooner had the bandit fired his gun, than Deputy Beebe shot him through the ribs. Sheriff Deming was taken to the Castle Gate hospital while Strakey was taken to the county jail in Price. Two companions of Strakey are in the hills surrounded by the officers who have been trailing gthe trio since late Wednesday night. One of the other two men is believed to be Leo Boyle, of the Utah state penitentiary, who is thought to have been Strakey's companion in the Dividend holdup. The identity of the third man is not known at present. Funeral arrangements for Ed Daugherty, the steelejack who fell to his death from one of the high smokestacks of the Sugar company Wednesday afternoon, are pending word from relatives. Tha body is at the Berg Mortuary of Provo. It is believed that Daugherty "has a wife and four children living in comUtah. Beaver, Telephonic munication with the deputy sheriff at Beaver partly substantiated this, according to Deputy Sheriff Karl Boshard. Efforts to reach the woman failed Wednesday, when it was said she had gone to Milford. Word was sent late Wednesday night to Sheriff J. D. Boyd who is at Milford to endeavor to find the woman and notify her of the accidental death of her husband. n According to Wyman Berg, man- ager of the Berg Mortuary, the man appears to be about 50 years of age. the completed Daugherty painting of one of the two smokestacks at the sugar company and had gone up to remove the tackle and Ms equipment to the other stack when the accident occurred about 1 :30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. He fell more than 80 feet and was dead when rushed over to his body. In the fall the body struck the guy wires of the stack, which threw the body a considerable distance from the chimney. Thursday afternoon it was learned that the man's real name was had . Edwafd Daugherty Prud , He is said to have arrived in Springville with a group of hoboes. He was picked up and questioned by Marshal Henry Clark, who thought the man closely resembled another for whose arrest a reward had been offered, but was released when papers of recommendation were found in his pockets. Tim officers are closing in on the men who are said to have barri caded themselves i:i a strong hold in the foothills. A fight for life is aU of expected, by the officers, whom are of the opinion that Boyle will never allow himself to be caught alive. Boyle and Strakey are suspic-ione- d by the Carbon county officials as being the perpetrators of a holdup Htaged Rolapp about two weeks ago. The men were traced to the Uintah country and were then lost track of until they showed up in Eureka the day preceding the holdup in Dividend. Utah county officials as well as the Carbon county officers have been working on the case contin uously since Saturday night The men were traced to Dolapp Wednesday evening and immediately several of the officers were detailed on the case. Early Thursday morning the men were located in the foothills and immediately the officers began closing in on them. Every effort is being made by the officers to capture the other two men before nightfau. SOCIETY BOOTLEGGERS.
