March 1 OJ.FD Mrs. Claud A. Miller had almost given up hope today that her sailornusband might get home In time to see their baby daughter before the child died. A formal mimeographed letter from the navy department, informed in-formed the 19-year-old wife of an electrician's mate that her request re-quest for an emergency furlough for her husband serving in the Pacific had been referred to his commanding officer. "No assurance assur-ance can be given" that the request re-quest will be granted, the letter said. Mrs. Miller had telegraphed President Roosevelt and Secretary Secre-tary of the Navy James V. Forr-estal Forr-estal asking for a furlough for her husband. Their 16-months-old baby was expected to die of an incurable heart disease within 30, -days, she said. There are 57 different controls in the cab of a modern railroad locomotive. It is necessary for a man to know and understand the use of all 57 of these before he is capable of operating one of these engines.
