TUNE 24, 1942 PAGE -THREE SCHOOL BO AllD VOtESBUDGEf FOR $339,373 A budget providlner for expen ditures and revenues of $339,373 in the Provo city school district for the fiscal year beginning July 1. 1942, was adopted by the board of education at a public hearing Tuesday night. Not a single citizen citi-zen appeared at the meeting to offer protest. The budget is 31775.25 lower than the budget of 3341,148.25 for last year. For the most part," the break down of the budget Is about .the same as last year. The major' ii) crease is $6,620.20 for Instruction, this being necessary in view . of. Increased salaries; the main decrease de-crease is in capital outlay, where a reduction of 35200 is noted. A comparison of the budget figures for two years follows, with the 1942-43 figures listed first: General control, $12,484.36, same; , instruction, $224,590.13, $218,969,93; operation, $38,000. $37,908.75; maintenance, $9700, $9300; capital outlay, $6000, $11,-200; $11,-200; coordinate activities, $4519, same; auxiliary agencies, $1800, same; fixed charges, $2859.51, $2396.01; debt service, $39,420, $42,570.20. The amount budgeted for debt service, although less than last year, covers all obligations coming due for the year, in cu ding $39,000 in bonds, $8920 interest, and $500 interest on short term loans, said Dr. Milton Marshall, president of the board. The revenue budget follows: $145,318. local district school tax based on $9,100,000 assessed valuation valu-ation with 17 mill levy and 94 per cent collection; $133,380, state district school fund based on 5400 children and $24.70 per capita; $12,000. uniform school fund; $22,-000, $22,-000, state equalization fund; $4000, state high school fund; $12,000, tax sale redemptions-, $175, forest reserve fund; $3700, refund from Provo utilities in lieu of taxes; $5000, vocational fund; $1400, refund re-fund oh teacher retirement; and $400, rent and miscellaneous. The board of education authorized author-ized Dr. J. C. Mof fitt, superintendent superintend-ent of schools, to employ Don Mc-Conkie Mc-Conkie and Matilda Huber as teachers at the Dixon junior high and Joaquin elementary schools, respectively. Poultry day had been held here annually for the past J.7 years by the American Fork Lions club. Government agencies have been asking that fairs, conventions and similar celebrations be postponed until after the war emergency, as a measure to save rubber and gasoline. Parade to Depict Development Of American Freedom Designed to depict the birth of freedom and its development up to the present time Provo's Fourth of July parade will feature an historical and patriotic theme. "The Torch of Liberty" will be the theme of the procession, which is divided into three main di visions. Entitled "The Fight for Free dom through the Ages," the first division will illustrate America's fight for emancipation from the rule of England, and will show phases of various battles fought to maintain America's freedom, according to J. Rulon Morgan, parade chairman. The second division, entitled "The Challenge" will treat the subject of war and its effect upon free people. In this division will be depicted the sieges of Peari Harbor and Bataan, informs Mr. Morgan. To include three subdivisions, the third main division is entitled en-titled "America Accepts the Challenge." Chal-lenge." This division will show America's growing strength. Representatives Rep-resentatives of the army, navy, marines. Red Cross, Provo home guard, Sea Scouts, Boy Scouts, civilian air patrol, and Provo mounted police will be seen in this division. Following these groups will come the theme floats of . the parade, "The Torch of Liberty." This structure is now being buTTl by the Provo city utilities department, depart-ment, according to Mr. -Morgan. Many bands and drum and bugle corps will also participate in the procession. Voting Opens In Queens' Contest Voting places for the Provo July Fourth queen contest opened this afternoon according to Mrs. L. L. Cullimore, contest chairman. Persons buying war bonds and stamps will be awarded one vote for each cent expended. In other words, purchase of a 10-cent war stamp entitles a person to 10 votes. Votes may be cast upon purchase pur-chase of stamp and bonds at the following places: all theaters, all banks, Woolworths, the president's office at B.Y.U. and all drug stores. F. Cannon of Provo, who has now completed her interneship at St. Mark's hos pital In Salt Lake City, and has accepted a position at the Salt Lake clinic, as medical technician. Miss Cannon spent a few days in Provo, returning to Salt Lake Monday. Arriving today In Provo for a two weeks' vacation , with family and friends, are Dr. and "Mrs. Glen P. Vincent and family of Sail Francisco, Calif. They will be at the home of Dr. Vincent's parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Vincent. La Veil Knight, son of Mr, and Mrs. Leo J.
