Distance runner Dave Spence should finish high in his specialties, the mile and as should Mark Johansen, who has the fastest time in the In the sprints, the Cougars should be strong, but Hirschi doesn't know what to expect from his squad because of injuries. Olympic medalist Oluvemi Kayak-wilrun, but this will be his first competition since he injured a leg muscle more than a month ago. Erik Hughes has the WACs fastest time in the 55m at 6.29, but Fresno State's Terry Bowen is close behind at 6.30. Hughes and Tyler Anderson, both football players, are ranked second and third in the WAC in the 200m. Patrick Mitchell finished second last year in the 55m hurdles and is ranked third going into the meet. BYU's performances in the field events could determine whether the Cougars win the conference title again this year. Besides Godfrey in the triple favorites. jump, there are no clear-cu- t Jim Waite ranks third in the long jump, and Lance Greer is third in the high jump. In the weight events, Eli Herring is fourth in the shot put. Friday's events begin with the weight throw. Other finals will be the run. Filong jump and the nals will be contested Saturday in all Other 'events. EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic Division Orlando Boston Miami Philadelphia Washington Swimmers eye WAC meet if all goes according LAS VEGAS to pattern, it's BYU's turn to win the WAC women's swim championships this weekend. The Cougar paddlers, who captured the first WAC title in 1991, lost it to Colorado State last year and are now with the Rams. Before joining the WAC, the two league challengers had an even 4 split in the High Country conference. d meet will be held at The annual UNLV to take advantage of the low altitude which favors faster times, thus increasing the possibility of NCAA cuts. Preliminaries begin Wednesday morning and finals in several events conclude the meet Saturday night. "I'm pretty confident about our chances," said BYU coach Stan Crump. "We're a better team this year. We have more bodies. I just wish we had more depth. Jill Teeples will swim out nf her head, she's swimming so fast right now. She should make some NCAA qualifying cuts." Even though Crump is optimistic about the Cougars' chances, he said that CSU has to be the favorite because they are solid in every event. "They dont have any holes in their program. Their diving has improved and they are strong again in distance, and will beat us there," Crump added. "We have to hope that kids from other schools can sneak in and take some distance points from them. "It used to be that the conference meet was just between us and Colorado State, but Fresno State and New Mexico have improved their programs, so now we have four good teams in the WAC." The Cougar diving corps, coached by Keith Russell, should dominate both Vanessa springboards. Bergman Thelin is the returning chamand three-metpion ol both the boards, and Valerie Blau, an NCAA qualifier the past two years, is a top challenger in both events. 4-- co-e- er Spikers host Stanford BYU men's volleyStanford ball team hosts second-ranke- d Saturday at the Smith Fieldhouse. Stanford was upset at home last weekend by Cal State Northridge. The eighth-ranke- d BYU gymnasts host I CLA, SUU With three straight team scores of better than 191 and a No. 12 ranking, (based on a Regional Qualifying Score of 131.225) in hand, BYU's women's gymnastics team comes home for only the third time this season to host UCLA (ranked sixth) and Southern Utah (25th) Friday. The meet begins at 7:3p p.m. in the Marriott Center. The Cougars are coming off a grueling week in which they met Georgia in Athens on Saturday, and returned to Utah for a meet in Logan on Monday. "We'll rest a bit this week rnd hope to be ready for this weekend," s.iid Cougar coach Brad Cattermole. Nagging injuries have slowed the Cougars since the first meet of the season at one point they at Southern Utah were' down to just three healthy gymnasts! But the athletes have gradually been returning and eight of the nine gymnasts are now on the active roster. "We're starting to get over a lot of what; was keeping us from competing," Cattermole said. "I expect we'll have a full tkam for the rest of the season and the scores ought to keep coming up." for the Cougars The top this season is sophomore Nanette who has a high score of 38.90 that includes 9.90 on floor and 9 85 on vault. Close behind her is freshman Juliet Bangerter i38 8.ri. Bangerttr has scored a school record 9.95 on bars and a 9.85s on both beam and floor. Matching 9.95 on bars and 9.85 on beam, is frtjshman Elisabeth Crandall.
