Show July 9, 1981 THE HERALD. Provo. Utah Page 23 BBB Seeks ChamberTopics Arbitrators Some Viewson Citizen Interest By CONNIE BARKER Executive Vice President Orem Chamber of Commerce Orem residents should be most appreciative of the elected leaders of our city. We should be verygrateful we have ethical, responsible leadership who are more concerned about our welfare than we seem to be. There seems to be a definite pattern at council meetings. If a particular neighborhood might be affected by an agenda item, that neighborhood is representedat that council meeting. You can usually judge how much opposition there is to a proposal by the size of the crowd. Those in opposition can somehow manage to attend much easier than those who support the proposal. If a companyhasbid on a project, those bidding mightattend the meeting. Occasionally, scouts working on a citizenship merit badge will attend as observers Usually, but not always, a few newSpaper reporters will be there, for part of the meeting anyway. And if there's a chance someone might say something controversial. the television crews even show up Youcantell who is attending for what even if they don’t say a word As soon as their agenda item has been voted on, theyget up and leave They maystandin the foyer anddiscuss what happened, but as far as the other agenda items are concerned. they have lost interest. It mustbe interesting for the council to watch asthe size of the audience diminishes as each agenda item is completed It would also be interesting to knowhow the council interprets the attendance at meetings. Is it because the public doesn’t trust the council's decisions that causes them to attend when their cause is being discussed” Oris it a cornpliment the public has so much faith in their decisions they don’t feel the need to attend regularly - or even oc casionally? Rows of chairs were set up in the foyer in anticipation of an overflow Surely, it isn’t because the public concerned about Orem’s future with the closely trimmed budget? When doesn't care — or whyis there such a clamor over certain decisions” And how often are those making the loudest noises are the ones who are conspicuous by their absence at meetings. Manyresidents. bytheir own admission, have never attended a council meeting. Of course that doesn't prevent them from making their viewpoint known after the fact At the last hearing for the 1981-82 fiscal year budget. there were very few residents in attendance. outside of city employees who were con cerned about wages and bexefits Maybeit is a vote of confidence when we don't attend Council crowd. Most of the chairs remained empty Where werethe rest of the meetings After all. we had enough faith in the Council to elect them taxpayers when the budget was dis. cussed” Does the council know how we feel about the budget” Are we But ours is a government to provide the services we expects” Or will we feel the inconvenience is justified” How do we feel about the sign or dinance, home occupations. zoning the waste disposal plant. mobile heme parks, subdivisions neighborhood parks. beerlicenses” pens ‘next door’’.
