Neldon Bullock began working with marquetry (inlaid wood) in 1971 and recently was able to turn it into a e occupation. Using the natural tones and patterns of the wood, Bullock turns out pieces so fine they resemble oil paintings. full-tim- He obtains his fine wood veneers from furniture outlets in New York and Illinois, and has accumulated hundreds of samples of varying wood tones, grains, textures and patterns. He reports that all his works are in natural wood tones. "The color you see is the exact color of the wood when it was cut. I rub the surface with oil and spray the top with a clear finish to protect the wood," he said. The symbol in the Junenile Court is made of 23 different kinds of wood from all over the world. They include flat cut walnut, quarter cut walnut, walnut feather crothc, Carpathian walnut, holly, cherry, French olive Avo-dir- e, ash, white ash, burl, koa, maple burl, curly maple, tulipwood, poplar, Kevazingo, maple, Brazilian, rosewood, fiddleback koa, mahogany, bees wing narra, Goncalo Alves, and Andean rosewood. Bullock's portrait of Gov. and Mrs. Scott M. Matheson, which required three months to complete, received considerable attention. He was commissioned to complete "Cornucopia" in wood, which now hangs in the Wilkinson Center cafeteria at Brigham Young University. His "Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch" was purchased by Billy's Country Emporium in Wyoming, and he has also done work for Doug Kershaw, the Raging Cajun, and has completed a logo for the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. Marquetry is not only an occupation for Bullock, it is a consuming hobby. He becomes so absorbed in his work that he often forgets about the time and must be reminded by his wife Jewel that it is not 10 p.m, but actually 2 a.m. He says his works will last forever if they are cared for like fine pieces of furniture. Former Mayor Haws Difrfey was visibly irritated by failure of the council to abolish the agency, and rejected a request from North County Mayor Malcolm H. Beck to serve on a committee seeking a compromise. Beck recommended a committee comprised of business people, residents and city council members, to find an alternate plan to recitalize the downtown business district. Durfey said it was his understanding, and that of the group he represented, that the council and mayor had decided to abolish the RDA at a public hearing by the RDA recently, and to abandon a. proposed Central Business District Neighborhood Development Plan. The plan included about 80 acres in the project area, describing it as a 'blighted area.' Opponents objected to the term blighted, saying it would reduce property values, feared the power granted to the agency, and objected to what some considered subsidizing the downtown business district through increment taxing. Several members of the council meeting audience, including Garth Read, former councilman, and Dick Bate, member of the advisory council on redevelopment, defended the concept of the RDA, sayuing it is a tool to accomplish thte goal of a strong downtown business district. "Before you vote to abolish it, think very strongly about what you are doing to the entire city." Councilwoman Janice Mayne said she believes the future development of the west side of American Fork, together with the al- ' r : " . "I feel very comfortable about voting to abolish the agency," she said, adding she thought the city moved too fast on the development plans without the approval of those most directly affected. "If the agency is abolished we have to search for another mechanism for funding," Councilman Stephen Sowby stated. "I take a stand for retention of the agency, but in favor of reducing the size of the project, removing the power of imminent domain from the agency and redoing the blight napkin rings $50 a more in finest preshrunk 100 cotton ecru bee. and painstaking care go into each piece, blending dei-cat-e e sizes to ptacemats and acand patterns symmetrical designs. cessory Items you can machine wash In cool water and by flat to dry.
