Show Page - 50 Sunday, December THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, 26, 1982 Bullock Shows CELEBRATE THE NEW YEAR WITH Marquetry HOLIDAY FAVORITES In Art Exhibit BY CHARLENE R. WINTERS Herald Staff Writer 8 P.M. WE WILL BE CLOSED NEW YEAR'S EVE AT Neldon Bullock's art comes from at least the all over the world wood used to build his pictures come from throughout the globe. Bullock does marquetry, a process of combining wooden pieces in a sort of puzzle fashion to form a picture. Marquetry is an old art, but little practiced in this area. A selection of the Lehi native's art is on exhibit at Bonneville Bank in Provo where it can be seen through January. He was introduced to marquetry in 1971 while studying under the direction of Ed Nolten at Utah Technical College. He shifted his emphasis to "paintings" and this work has gradually become his vocation. "It takes a lot of time and patience to complete a picture," he explained. His work begins when he either draws or uses a photograph of his subject or uses a live model as a guide. He then starts carving woods with different colors and textures piece by piece in a wood inlay process. He applies them to a base with glue, then sands, rubs, smooths and finishes them with glazes and plastic sprays, BYU commissioned a work by him this summer, and his cornucopia of foods in wood can be seen in WE WILL BE CLOSED 'V: )M NEW YEAR'S DAY JENO'S GIANT COKE FROZEN CANDY BARS 8 Pack, 16 Oz. Among his most popular works is a large hanging of Butch Cassidy and his gang which now hangs in Billy's, a bar in Evanston, Wyo. Bullock's interest is the Old West and historical western figures. Among his favorites are his representations of Brigham Young Porter Rockwell, Geronimo and Smelly Austin, a Lehi mountain man. Marquetry is not new. Egyptians used it for walls and caskets. The Romans found it a beautiful art to use. And although Bullock sees it as a revived art, he thinks he is among the few who do it in the west. At the time of his Herald interview, Bullock was completing a rendition of David and Goliath. More than a dozen different woods were used to create it. For instance, the background is beeswing nara wood. The handle is made of rosa paroba; the leather in the slingshot is called mai dou. David's clothing is made from fiddle back mapel. Butternut comprises the strings on the slingshot. David's head is made from cherry burl and Hondorus end grain mohagony. Goliath's head and beard are made Oz. Bag. 1 59 Special 12.88. Style and cut.
