A town with a debatable origin is Kamas in Summit County. Many residents claim that the name was deriv ed from an Indian herb while others say it was named after an early explorer by that name. Despite the many theories the naming st.ll remains a mys tery. The Indians and trappers re ferred to it as ' Kamas Prairie" or "Yambow" the valley of herbs. A herb known as Kamas or camaa grew in abundance in the town's early history. The camas is a genus of plant of the lily family. They have narrow crass-lik- e leaves known as "bear grass" and many flow ered clusters of blue, purple or white flowers called "wild hya cinths." Used As Food The plant thrives well in mea dows wet in spring. These bulbs made up much of the diet of the Ute Indians. They were eaten BORN both cooked and raw.
