THE DEMON. What is it, in your life, that you fear or dread most? And how much effect is this fear or dread having on your health, fortunes, state of mind and general happiness ? Along this line, you will be interested in a peculiar case that has been perplexing the Workmen's Compensation Commission of New York state. In a hat factory some of the employes got mercurial poisoning from handling dyes. One of the workers who became ill and had to hunt another job, asked the commission for money to cover the loss of several weeks' pay. A medical specialist, testifying at the hearing, says that this particular employe's illness was due to fear, not to poisoning. That is, seeing his become ill, he grew afraid that he also might get poisoned, and worried himself into neurosis, a nervous condition in which the patient often imagines that he has a physical illness in this case, poisoning. Fear, under various terrifying scientific names, in the last few years since the war ended, has become a common disease. Wherever a group of physicians get together they begin talking about this pandemic of nervous apprehension. Doctors' offices are crowded with people fearing that their hearts are about to stop beating, that they are on the verge of a nervous breakdown, that an annoying acid condition of the stomach may be stealtha ily advancing cancer. of these maladies are Probably imaginary. They are, fortunately, making people realize "the mind's vast power over the body, for good or bad. Basil King's book, "The Conquest of Fear," suggests that most of the world's troubles these days are due to demon, Fear. "There is not a government which is not afraid of some other government. There is not a government which is not afraid of its own people. There is not a people which is. not afraid of its own government. There is not a country in which one group is not afraid of some other group. All is rivalry, enmity, suspicion, confusion and distrust, while men's hearts are fainting for fear and for anxious expectation what is coming on the world." Fear (apprehension combined with distrust) leads to g And reacts in vengeance. There can be no- happiness for individuals or nations until we rise in our might and slay the demon, Fear. fellow-worke- rs Armory. TIMPANOGOS CLUB I. Editor and Publisher B. (VRODGERS Theopentnr ball of tie Tim club at tne armory Friday ogos, ereniag'was a pronounced success. The armory ball was decorated in a most pleasing style, the picture of Mt. fimpanogos making certain why the dancing club of married folk is so named. The new officers acting as reception committee nicely smoothed out whaterer wrinkles had been left by the consolidation of the new and the older dancing club, and a crowded floor of delighted dancers was the result. Wildes orchestra furnished the music and did it well, which is merely saying that they did It in their form. The punch and cakes were added attractions, and erery member and his partner wore the club's rose souvenir. Among those present at the opening ball were: President and Mrs. Roy Boren, Secretary and Mrs. J. Edwin Stein, Treasurer and Airs. George M. Harris. Mr. and Mrs. J. Milt Jones, Mr. and Mrs. J. BURNS " - ; Assured with the installation of a Ti foresee which candidate will be elected In any election; At present there is a genera restlessness among the people, due in great measure to the aftermath of the great war, in the way of high prices, high taxes, etc. The voters, unable to do anything to change the situation, have only their vote. to use in protest, and often cast it in a spirit of discontent, without regard to the merits of the candidate or the issues involved. Miss Robertson was defeated by a Democrat, whom she had defeated in the previous election, when the tide went the other way. Miss Robertson, during the time she was in congress, made a very good record. She, as she expressed it herself, on many occasions, was not sent to congress as a woman, or to represent women exclusively, and she has been criticised for her viewpoint, on several subjects, by women less broadminded than she. She has proved herself to be sensible, conservative and a sound thinker upon important questions, and her return to congress would have been of benefit to her constituents and to the Republican party as a whole, but in her defeat thre is no cause for pessimism in any greater degree than that naturally felt after an election by the defeated candidates. My defeat bears that contention out." Thus spoke Miss Alice M. Robertson, defeated Republican member of congress from the second Oklahoma district, in a statement recently. Miss Robertson's defeat by no means proves that , men do not wish to see women in office. If this were tne case, sue would not nave been elected In the first place.
