Show CAUSE OF SICKNESS every form of disease has a canso prevent sickness this evil cause must be removed in many instances the cause or origin of disease is unknown to us but where it is known it becomes a duty to remedy the bame eo far as it is in our own power it is a noticeable noti cable fact that this season more sickness prevails in provo than ever before druggists of eight or nine years practice in provo claim they have never been required to compound BO many prescriptions as at present it is a remarkable winter we are having quite pleasant during the day and exceedingly cold at night tho weather is so treacherous many fall victims to disease be they fully realize it though the state of the weather this winter ia the cause of much sickness there are other causes fully as potent we refer directly to tho bad water that many families are compelled to use as one principal cause the wells in many parts of the city have dried up this season and people are gaining their supply for culinary purposes from those sluggish ditches that flow through the streets water acts ag a purifying agency and as it flows through the city now more densely populated than ever before it naturally accumulates a great many impurities puri ties furthermore the late snows that now fall cannot long withstand the rays of the sun but melt and carry impurities into the streams from whence the city gains its domestic supply all of these strongly argue tho necessity of water works for provo our climate may be over so good the skies ever so bright but this one fact has been clearly demonstrated that impure water will and death under the most favorable circumstances cum stances otherwise the rapid growth of city demands that some immediate step be taken to supply the city with pure water at all seasons of the year another noted feature has been brought prominently before the notice of the public in our courts the last few days in the matter of people who maintain nuisances such as garbage piles and slop places we are pleased that these cases have been brought into the courts anyone who is so careless as to unnecessarily befoul tho city and he thereof with filth thereby causing diseases and death are actual criminals and should be dealt with in the courts our city officials may not be able to supply waterworks water works just at present but they can cause that filth nuisance to be abated that backyards be cleaned up and slops disposed of in a suitable manner wo remarked above that we were pleased that some such cases have met the attention of the court in one sense we are ashamed of it we are ashamed of citizens t thai compel such attention from our officers but we aro proud that our officers are performing their duty we hope they will continue in the same line until every known cause of disease is removed that can be removed |
