Show CANADAS SIR JOHN macoonald is a scotchman he was born in glasgow in 1815 and when but fifteen years of age his father moved to canada and settled at kingston ontario the boy received the best school advantages afforded in the dominion and then began practice at the bar in he was appointed queens counsel SIR JOHN made gome distinction as a lawyer but his special fort was that ot a politician he was sent from kingston to parliament in 1844 being then hardly thirty years of age and he has continued in pub lie service ever since in 1867 he led the movement for the confederation of the dominion provinces and was sent as a delegation to london to present the petition of the people to the home government he has been at the head ot his government off and on since 1858 and has continued the leader of his party the tories for many years the liber als have almost despaired dis paired of downing this able loader and sir JOHNS popularity continued very great until the late election the issue then was reciprocity with the united states and sir JOHNS opposition policy nearly brought defeat to his party |
